I have always been a big fan of Pirata Group from Pici to Tokyolima. Hence, I was really excited to try out Chaiwala with a high expectation (especially when I loved Black Sheep's New Punjab Club).The atmosphere was amazing and all the staffs were super friendly. The atmosphere was amazing and all the staffs were super friendly. However, we ordered the tasting menu and the food was disappointing. The lamb tandoor was overdone while we have asked for medium-rare and the curry was tasteless.

Overall, I love the atmosphere and the staffs. However, they really need to improve their food to compete with New Punjab Club.

There are not much choices for indian food in Hong Kong. This is one of the best one I have ever tried. Especially, celebrating birthday with your loved ones. The staffs here will prepare the candle on the dessert plate. Most surprisingly, they will help the customers to take instant picture and give it back as a gift. Highly recommend to celebrate any anniversary and birthday in a chic restaurant. We have ordered the tasting menu for $480 pp, which is very worthy and rich in food.

🧆The signature dish— PANI PURI WITH JAL-JEERA (crispy ball w/jar)— was strongly recommended by the waitress. It has a crunchy ballshaped shell on the outside and minced flavoured meat, potatoes and a mixture of seasonings on the inside. There’s a small jar of sauce for you to pour on this little ball. I put too much sauce on my first one and it ended up tasting super salty. I put less(1 teaspoon) on the second one, it was much better.

🌮The beef taco was good, but you can order sth more special in this rest unless you’re a big fan of 🌮 like me! It wasn’t bad tho, still a high quality one.

🍛I alrdy miss the butter chicken so much!! It’s sweet & little spicy. Many ppl can’t eat spicy food, this level of spiciness was so mild that it shd be acceptable to most people. Another thing is, butter chicken is always cooked with chicken breast, a part that is Often complained to be tough & chewy. But this one turned out to be tender and soft!!😍

🧆The cheese ball was fabulous as well but we were too full to finish it. Having 4 dishes was too much for two of us. I recommend to order less.

I was a little disappointed at the service tbh despite the satisfaction w/ the food. I usually received better services in this kind of relatively high quality restaurants. The waitress poured water for us once in a long while. Also, the butter chicken was on the staff’s table for some time until it was served to us.

燒烤分別選擇了Chicken Tikka和Grilled Pink Salmon。⠀
Chicken Tikka好吃👌🏻 雞肉很嫩滑,有一點辣,搭配的Yogurt醬很開胃。相反Pink Salmon就有點烤過頭了,不算嫩滑,搭配的牛油果醬也不算濃郁。

咖哩方面分別有Fish Curry 和 Yellow Curry。Fish Curry比較偏向椰汁很重的味道,吃多了有點膩,而且魚肉只有少少幾塊,而且很不完整。另外的Yellow Curry 應該是鷹嘴豆,有點偏鹹,但味道尚算不錯。主食方面有印度香料飯和Cheese Naan。來這間餐廳之前看到有評論說這裡的Naan真的很好吃,因此我也對它有比較高的期望。可惜,薄薄的naan沒什麼起司,也沒什麼口感。反而印度香料飯配上咖哩蠻不錯的。

總結:餐廳環境很好,裝潢很特別很漂亮,食物質素一般,服務都算好,就是上菜有點慢,主要都是吃環境。食物分量不算多,但很飽肚🍴整體來說,在Restaurant Week以優惠價錢來說,還算可接受,不過這個價錢有更多更好的選擇。⠀

The decor is interesting with different colors showing up in the furniture, light fixtures that resembles the tree vines dropping down from branches, recreating an old house ambiance with the wooden panels. There is an apparent creative vibes in the atmosphere and we quickly some drinks to start. I had the Classic Lassi ($70) while my wife had the Nimbu Pani ($70). We decided to go for the Tasting Menu ($480 per person).

The first course was the signature Pani Puri with Jal-Jeera. Jal-Jeera is a traditional Indian beverage serving as aperitif to increase appetite, often known as 'cumin water'. The pani puri is a snack, with the hollowed puri (a deep-fried crisp crepe) filled with tamarind chutney, chili, channa masala and potato. Pouring the cumin water into the puri before eating, the snack was a great feast of flavors despite a bit spicy.

The second course was 'Maxi-Thali' Beef Sukha, an Indian tortilla with slow-cooked beef chunks, southern Indian spices and curry leaves. Squeezing a few drops of lemon juice in, the acidity and spices blend very well, providing another nice mix of different flavors. The beef was quite tender, and I like how the chef using slow cook technique to avoid the meat getting dried and tough.

The third course was Palak Patta Shakarkandi Chaat, which was a super chaat with spinach fritters, sweet potato crisps, spiced yoghurt dressing and house chutney. Chaat is a traditional Indian snack, found on street stalls and casual restaurants. I found this to be my favorite on the night, with a really interesting mix of sweet, sour, spicy and savory taste integrated very well together. At the same time the fritters and crisps gave a nice mix of chewy and crunchy texture as well. A harmonious orchestra of sensory delights and I highly recommend to try this one.

Next was the tandoor, freshly grilled from the clay oven. A very big portion with three components. There were two Myanmar Tandoori Prawns, with the large king prawns marinated in a spicy Indo-Thai marinade. Among the three grills this one was the best in taste. The Tandoori Lamb Chops were marinated with papaya, chili and black pepper, then char-grilled and served with chick-pea masala and mint dip. Also tasty, but inevitably the meat was a bit rubbery because they were grilled. The Chicken Tikka was the classic of the restaurant, with hung yoghurt, chili, cinnamon, and cucumber raita. The chicken was nice too, still moist on the inside of the meat, and the marinade giving a nice punch. But overall the amount of meat for this dish would made it difficult for customers to finish all.

Next was the Old Delhi Butter Chicken, with the charred and pulled chicken in a rich tomato fenugreek sauce. The curry was very good, with the sauce not very spicy but having an underlying heat which stimulate the palate. The chicken in my opinion was more the supporting role. I would not mind just having the sauce indeed.

Serving as the side was Poriyal, which was a sauteed bowl containing broccoli, snow peas, green beans and spinach, tossed with mustard, coconut and curry leaves. Personally I found the vegetable to be a bit too dry for my liking. But on the taste it was fairly good.

Apart from the naan, there was also Basmati Rice. The long-grained rice was steamed and flavored with ghee and cardamon, with a signature aroma. The fluffy rice was also a great pair with the curry sauce.

Finishing with the 'Bollywood Style' Dessert, the cardamon panna cotta had the mango sauce poured on top, as well as some crumble and an edible flower. An interesting way to add the herbal note to the dessert, it was a good finale for our meal.

Overall the food was good and the tasting menu allowed us to appreciate many different Indian dishes, and was a good arrangement for small groups. The bill was $1,210 and the restaurant did not have service charge so remember to give relevant amount of tips to the staff.

餐廳座落於蘭桂坊附近,由一個神秘既紅色門落basement,就會見到好大既呢間印度餐廳。有bar,亦會見到廚房,設計新穎得嚟充滿印度情懷。staff十分friendly,熱心介紹menu。menu亦清楚展示食材origins,可以一邊挑選菜式一邊研究印度唔同地方既特色食材。cocktail同酒單亦幾豐富,亦係一間座落於中上環既餐廳必備元素。食物方面,擺盤精美,可惜主打菜式masala調味太過鹹,所以味道方面可以再改善。但總括嚟講成個experience都頗為完美:)

餐廳座落於蘭桂坊附近,由一個神秘既紅色門落basement,就會見到好大既呢間印度餐廳。有bar,亦會見到廚房,設計新穎得嚟充滿印度情懷。

staff十分friendly,熱心介紹menu。menu亦清楚展示食材origins,可以一邊挑選菜式一邊研究印度唔同地方既特色食材。cocktail同酒單亦幾豐富,亦係一間座落於中上環既餐廳必備元素。

食物方面,擺盤精美,可惜主打菜式masala調味太過鹹,所以味道方面可以再改善。但總括嚟講成個experience都頗為完美:)

Summary: Variety, tons of food, and a cool, colorful vibe. Chaiwala's Indian brunch is a great change of pace from Eggs Benedict and Avocado Toast, packing a great sampling of Indian cuisine, with great service to boot. The only issue is quite limited mains, but you’ll be so full by then you won’t care. I'm not a big fan of Chaiwala for dinner - i went here when it was newly opened and was not impressed by the flavors (pretty standard Indian) or value (something like 500 p.p. and we were not nearly full). It's basically the opposite experience for Brunch. Here's the menu:

The restaurant, if you’ve never been, is deceptively huge, meandering and decorated with Indian knick-knacks, it’s especially colourful for brunch – check out the chaat bar:

One note: the food at the chaat bar isn't that thrilling – I wasn’t very familiar with the concept of chaat, but they’re more like snacks, lots of tiny crunchy things, which are tasty with the chutneys they provide. I didn’t take a picture, but they have a plain yogurt, beetroot-yogurt, Mint-yogurt and tamarind chutney, and you'll be thankful for the variety, as the slightly tart yogurts are a perfect complement to the curries and tandoori.

The service is excellent; attentive and knowledgeable, they were constantly wiping the moisture on the ceiling AC to prevent it from dripping, as well as refilling the chaats as they depleted. Thanks Alonso!

In addition, for each pair of people, you also get a freshly made aloo masala (potato) dosa, which was excellent – crunchy and warm, with a spiced potato mix inside.

Compared to the limp offerings at Envoy, these are a world apart. Tasty egg, potato and onion filling that you drizzle (or drown) with tamarind-infused water in a perfectly fried shell, it’s a perfect appetizer. I think I ate 4 or 5.

According to our server, they are experimenting with a Biryani rice dish, which they were offering as part of this week’s brunch, luckily for us.

Beautifully spiced, the cardamom and anise-infused flavors keep rolling in as you eat, and while it’s slightly spicy, it doesn’t take away from the dish. I had multiple servings of this.

Finally, you get to the main courses. The only real knock I have against this brunch is that there isn’t a ton of variety in the main courses, unless you’re willing to add to the bill.

I’d never seen this before – lightly spiced, they marinate this in buttermilk, grill it in the tandoor and then melt some cheese on it. Very unusual, and tasty, but no one really loved it.

Don’t bother with this unless you’re vegetarian – nothing was particularly delicious

So we’d been eating for like 90 min at this point, and we were stuffed… THEN they brought the curries. We tried the fish curry for an extra $80, since there are just 3 choices for curry dishes: it was good but not worth the extra money.

Both were kind of standard, though standard butter chicken is still incredibly good. While I always love Saag dishes, I didn't see any Paneer in the spinach at all... maybe i didn't dig deep enough? seems like it was melted in if it was there at all. Another problem was that we had 7 people, so 3 butter chicken, 3 spinach, and just 1 fish curry.  Too much of a good thing. 

However, the Naan needs a shout out– fluffy but not overly doughy, crunchy yet still chewy inside, not too greasy – one of the best Naans I’ve had in HK.

They end this ridiculous meal with some small desserts – ice cream, an Indian sweet, and a raisin cake. Simple and sweet.

Overall, Indian food for me is about variety – each dish is so heavy that you need to balance it out with other flavors and chutneys. I love when restaurants offer a Thali, basically a sampler with many small dishes, so you get as many flavors as possible with each meal. While Chaiwala didn’t go that far, I really enjoyed the brunch variety – there isn’t the largest selection of mains, but there are enough, and with all the chaat to stuff your face with, you won’t go home unsatisfied. I’m not sure what actual Indians think of this food, but I thought it was delicious. 

I recommend this colorful brunch strongly for Indian-food newbies, or if you just want to try a bunch of things without assembling a giant crew (in fact, large groups are counter-productive since there are so few options for mains). If you only like specific Indian dishes and nothing else, this might not be the place for you. Then again, with a $180 drinks offer which gets you a sub-500 free-flow brunch, it's a bit hard to go wrong isn't it?

At Chaiwala, the location couldn't be more perfect as it is located where Zafran used to be.
The restaurant is big and not a spot is under decorated.
You get to Chaiwala by going through Hugger Mugger another successful English bar set in the 1970s with cocktails inspired by David Attenborough, Pink Floyd etc.
I love the way everything is so different once you pass the doors, it is like entering another world yet it feels like home in London especially the living room corner with an old working TV set,  dining table and photos on the walls.

Being clueless on what to eat, we had the  Dabbawala tasting Menu which includes a selection of signatures from Chaiwala.
The guy who served us was extremely knowledgeable and will ask your likes and dislikes as well as your relationship with spices.

Started with the Pani Puri:
These are a must try as they are crispy balls filled with potato and chickpeas.
You eat them by pouring Jal jeera in it.
I love Jal Jeera which is tangy and appetizing laced with cumin.
The challenge was trying to stuff the whole thing in my mouth to get all the flavours!!

Aloo Tikka Chaat:
This is another one of my favourite, spiced potato cake topped with delicious yoghurt and chutney followed by the bursting sweetness of the pomegranite seeds.

Moving on to the Modern dishes, the Mexi Thali which is a twist of Mexican cuisine.
It was tender pieces of slow cooked beef served on Indian Tortillas.

The following dishes will amaze you as being a fine Indian Restaurant, Chaiwala serves seafood which you will take your taste buds to the next level.
Malabar scallops (HK$190) are kerala-style Hokkaido scallops, with coconut and ginger sauce, fresh mango and curry leaf.

The lobster dish was simply lavish and different while the vegetable poriyal cooled the palate down with a crunch as it had lots of grated coconut.

As well as seafood, curries are a must for a complete Indian meal experience.

For curries, there was Kerala Fish curry and Old Dehli Butter chicken served with truffle Naan and rice.
The butter chicken was thick and rich complemented by the truffle naan which was topped with generous shavings of truffle just like they do with pasta at PICI!

The Tandoori range here is more than just chicken with lamb chops and fish.
I loved the lamb chops which were soft and came off the bone easily.

Although I was stuffed, dessert was a blow as it was my favourite carrot cake with delicious buttercream frosting topped with crispy carrots and beetroot.
The carrot cake was quite a substantial portion that will satisfy your sweet tooth as the first mouthful will send you craving for more.

The final act was the Chai tea latte which is poured at a height with skill into the cup so that fine layers of bubbles are formed.
It was mildly spiced and a great finish to the journey.

Chailwala is definitely the place to go for a memorable night out with great food and vibes.
Although they have brunches and lunches, I recommend going there in the evening as the darker ambiance makes it more memorable.
