住在西營盤都一段時間了,由充滿本地特色的小店到現在成行成市都是為外國人開的餐廳。最近這裏開了potato head是在Bali很有名的一間餐廳,他分為兩部份餐廳就是Kaum,另外還有一個隱蔽的音樂廳。餐廳裝飾很特別。餐廳原身是一間幼稚園,他們內裏刻意保留了部份幼稚園的原有裝飾。大門進去的通道,如果你細心留意的話,你會發現左手邊的牆壁便用了原有幼稚園的大閘來裝飾。食物質素非常穩定,如果你任意點任何一道菜,味道都有保證。可能是印尼菜,每一道菜味道都比較豐富濃厚,吃慣清淡廣東菜的客人來說,可能會不適應印尼菜的味道。

Kaum is probably the best authentic Indonesian restaurant in town (of the three that I know of). They've got a great open kitchen so you can see them preparing your food too and I like how professional the chefs are.If you have time, try to do a weekday lunch. It's not crowded like on weekends because there aren't any offices around so its nice and relatively quieter. On weekends the place is packed and very VERY loud.Best dish: Gado-gado which is an Indonesian salad with peanut sauce and kerupu

這個前菜其實跟家裡的蛋omelette 一樣,只是加了大蝦和脆片,魚露製成的醬汁很惹味,是整個前菜的靈魂。個人應為沒有特別,overpriced.

NASI RAMES $130

 (Steamed rice served with beef rending, fried chicken, eggplant, prawn sambal, sweet corn fritters and crackers)
主菜是一個飯,出奇的大分,兩個人吃的話就別想點太多side dish,3-4個人吃就差不多了。這個飯有:白飯配上雞肉,牛肉,羊肉,茄子和脆片,每一樣都用很多香料和香草煮成的,加上是煎煮,非常惹味,要是有點魚露醬汁就好了,這個主菜不是很特別。

這裡的送菜絕對是overpriced, 沒菜色有特別和驚喜,想想其他餐館造同一樣的菜,價錢不用那麼高,你就不會吃了。雖說這家餐廳走點fusion 路線,但從菜式裡真的看不出,只是普通的炒蛋和白飯配肉。

I went to dinner a few weeks back to (finally) see what all the fuss is about. I heard good things about the food, space and vibe but also with fair warningit does set your wallet back quite a bit. The bill totaled to about HK$1800 for the 3 of us.

I started my meal with a refreshing Potato Head signature mojito, HK$95.
We also had an order of Gohu Ikan Tuna, HK$90 (tuna tartare) and an order of Kerang Tahu, HK$85 (wok-fried fresh clams w/ shallots garlic, red chili, & lime juice) but I forgot to photograph them. Tooooooooo hungry.

Gully Udang Aceh | Rich Aceh style curry with coconut, tamarind, okra, and tiger prawns, HK$180. This rich curry with the plump tiger prawns were really well with a hot steaming bowl of rice. I loved the strong milky coconut aroma.

Tearing Balado | Fried purple eggplant braised in red chili, garlic and shallot sambal, HK$80. This was just alright for me and was the only dish we didn't finish eating. The fried purple eggplant was nice and spicy but for HK$80 we were definitely expecting a bit more.

Sate Iga Babi Kecap | Charcoal-grilled braised pork belly satay in sweet soya sauce, served with grilled scallions, HK$140. The pork belly satay came out looking really pretty. It was flavorful, tender and juicy. You didn't even need the extra soy sauce dipping sauce that it comes with.

Babi Guling | Roasted baby pig marinated w/ Balinese spices & served with urap vegetables, $258. This was my favorite of the night. The sauce was delicious- infused with juicy and sweet crab roe. The roasted baby pig meat was also extremely flavorful and rich. The fatty layer between the crispy skin and meat was a bit too much but overall, this dish was super!

There is nothing more despairing on Earth than having a horrendous dinner and emptying your wallet for it. Sure, you can suggest various forms of torture, or something like a lobotomy. But then again, you don't pay anything for torture and you certainly do not leave with a bad taste in your mouth after a lobotomy. Basically the closest comparison to an expensive meal gone bad is a robbery, where your soul and your wallet are being robbed by the restaurant in question. Here at Kaum by Potatohead, I was not just metaphorically 'robbed' at gunpoint, it was a straight up mugging.

Supposedly 'Kaum' means tribe in Indonesian, a fact proudly printed on the menu. Yet after tasting the food, I am sure that the entire continent would be justified in stoning the head chef to death for blaspheming their cuisine. In Bali, Potatohead was the hippest, trendiest beachfront location to drink and dine in for tourists and locals alike. The artsy, trendy concept then opened a three storey Singaporean outpost, where they sold great burgers on one floor (I love Three Buns so much I have their sticker on my laptop) and operated a lovely bar above. Compared to the other two, the Hong Kong outpost located in Sai Ying Pun was much more modest and refined. There was a coffee shop and an art space, and the kitchen has abandoned the Western cuisine that has served the company so well and replaced it with local Indonesian dishes. This was a terrible mistake.

Potatohead is famous for their cocktails, so we had to order one of their signatures. Great minds think alike as my partner and I both laid eyes on the ‘Pisang Manis’ (spiced Nusa Cana rum, milk, banana, lemon juice, palm syrup). We were very excited for this. Anyone who has ever had Goreng Pisang (deep fried banana) would be very intrigued to see how the sinful snack could be replicated into a drink. First visual: it came with 2 slices of caramelised banana slices over the top which I would not recommend you take a bite of (unless your teeth were were made of iron and you don’t mind sticky bits). The drink overall was quite pleasant, smooth and creamy with sharp fruity notes from the bananas and lemon. Prices were also reasonable (HK$120) when compared to other popular dining establishments in the region. Then the meal took a turn for the worse.
Beef Rendang

Interestingly, we were served the Beef Rendang (HK$200) first, despite it being a main course. I've had countless plates of Beef Rendang before, the beef should be succulent and soft from long braising, while the sauce should be spicy and aromatic. This was wrong, terribly wrong. It was cold, almost as if they just scooped it from a giant pre-made batch and served it straight to us. The beef itself was nice and tender, and the purple potato chips provided some crunch, but the sauce lacked the kick you get from chilis and was rather insipid. But overall, a cold main course was not what we expected from one of Hong Kong's hottest new restaurants.

Then our starter course arrived: 'Batagor' - 3 deep fried prawn and mackerel dumplings which sat in a cashew nut sauce. Being asian, (trust me, we have had our fair share of dumplings), we had to order this. We had high expectations on Kaum's interpretation of the humble fried dumpling. When the dish arrived, we gave ourselves 30 seconds to make passing comments, desperately trying to find positives as to not ruin our meal. Yes the dumpling skin was nice and crispy, and the filling tasted well. But eventually, we could not mask our disgust at the entire dish. The dumplings were bordering on lukewarm to cold, and the cashew sauce was bland, uninspired, just like any poorly executed peanut satay sauce. The fact that it costed HK$70 made it even more unforgivable.
Mie Gomak

Next to arrive was the Mie Gomak (Wok fried noodles with shredded chicken, mushrooms, Andaliman spices, curry leaves and coconut milk), probably the only saving grace of Kaum. Thankfully, it was hot as we were hankering for something warm. Although not nearly spicy enough for our asian tastebuds (disclaimer: a French lady beside me had it sent back for being way too spicy), the taste did come pretty close to 2 people going on a perfect date. The yellow noodles mingled happily with the well-balanced savoury curry sauce - the texture of the noodles was very comforting, soft and thick; and the curry sauce wasn’t too sweet nor too salty. The pieces of chicken and mushrooms were cooked properly as they should be for HK$140. My only gripe would be that if you wished this dish to be more spicy, you would have to pay a hefty price tag for any of their sambal chili sauces (HK$22/ea).

In the centre of the restaurant's open kitchen is a special bamboo grilling station, where the dying art of Balinese bamboo cooking is practiced and performed in front of diners. We ordered the Timbungan Babi (HK$295), where pieces of pork belly are marinated in an Indonesian spice mix before being wrapped in banana leaves and grilled inside a hollowed bamboo shoot. The pork was extremely well cooked and retained moisture, and the aromatic marinade meshed well with the protein. However, the spices were a bit too overpowering at times, especially when we bit into an actual lemongrass stem or a piece or torch ginger (which was quite often). Still, it was nice to be finally served something that actually tasted authentically Indonesian.
Ikan Bakar

Last came the Ikan Bakar (HK$278). Based on the menu's description (charcoal grilled blackened boneless barramundi with a tropical Manado Chilli, herb and fruit salsa), we expected it to be a well cooked piece of fish, soft and juicy with a nice charcoaled flavour. Sadly, it was a total let down. The only positive was that the dish was a big portion and could possibly feed a table of 3. And that is where it ends. To begin, the fish was NOT boneless as advertised in the menu (Westerners beware). Many of the bones along the fish's spine were still intact, and there were other small bones wedged here and there. The fish was also unevenly cooked. Some parts were extremely dry and overcooked, while other parts remained honeyed and succulent. The salsa, while tasty by itself, added little to the dish and felt like an entirely separate entity on the side of the plate. Overall, I felt terribly sorry for the fish that gave up its life for this mediocre cooking.

I think its safe to say that after this absolutely non-brutal (please note the blatant sarcasm) review of Kaum, neither of us will be coming back. The food does not justify the hefty price tag. Unless you are one to enjoy Westernised versions of Asian food with monotonous flavours and no kick (basically panda express in America), do think twice before emptying your wallet for this place.

玩完參巴醬工作坊後,肚子也餓,就開始品嚐美味的印尼菜。先由Soto AyamKaum開始,賣相平平無奇,清雞湯味道很清淡,不過材料卻放得很豐富,有雞蛋、烤雞肉及芽菜等等。可是,加入隨湯附上的配料後,味道變得出奇地不,美味得多,而且純粹依著個人口味來調節,小弟的魔法就是兩瓣青檸、一小匙Sambal Soto及少許特製蒜粒,酸酸辣辣,十分開胃。

如果要說燒烤食物是印尼菜的特式,那麼就絕對少不了Sate IgaBabiKecap ,一串串的肥美的烤豬腩串放在一個放有木炭的烤爐上,賣相伴隨著香味已吸引了大家的注目。當熱力把豬腩肉的油份烘出來滴在木炭時,煙霧四散,腩肉串上覆蓋著陣陣的炭香。趁熱一口咬下,豬腩肉爽口得來腍身,再沾上特製的甜豉油醬汁,滋味百倍,小弟忍不住口吃了兩串。

與烤豬腩肉串同樣以炭爐端出來的是Sate Lilit Pak Oka,即是以魚肉加入其他海鮮製成的海鮮串,有點似味道香濃的魚餅,比較沒有口感,但蘸上以香茅、辣椒及椰子油製成的SambalMatah,香味誘人。

正所謂好戲一浪接一浪,是日主角非BebekGoreng 莫屬,鴨皮烤得卜卜脆的,肉質恰到好處的柔嫩及軟滑。不過,重點卻落在加入了榴槤打成的參巴醬,令人驚喜萬分,絕對估不到味道是如此合襯,令人拍案叫絕。

然而香濃惹味的Terongbalado卻是送飯的首選,在茄子上放滿了惹味的辣椒、蒜泥及香蔥等的混合物,味道帶少許酸辣,配合Steamed Rice,實在非常美味,不消一會兒已被消滅。

印尼食物大多都以香料味重及燒烤為主,所以一杯清新解暑的飲品實在少不了,而這款Coco loco是以原個椰青、加入椰子肉、椰子及檸檬汁等調成,不但清新,還可下火,有如沐春風的感覺。另外,還有一系列富有特式的雞尾酒,用料配搭創新,卻非常好喝。

最後,更進入音樂室參觀,環境優雅,四周圍設置了多組環迴立體聲喇叭,如置身在內,有如一個小型演奏廳般,感覺悠閒舒適,如果可以追加一杯香濃的咖啡,享受生活應是如此。

搭的士嚟到見到係一棟大廈仲要係住宅身邊又有老人家決定打電話好彩電話入面嗰個外籍人士可能知道呢種情況經常發生出到門口向我哋揮手仲要行多大概10 20米嘅斜坡上去令到行動不便嘅長輩非常不滿呢間餐廳都係適合後生仔去如果唔識英文更加唔好嘗試因為餐牌上面唔單止唔係英文名仲要係印尼文好彩我識少少印尼文埋單嘅時候發現佢加多咗樣嘢先至冇蝕英文又形容唔到個dish嘅精髓老實講如果你想食地道印尼菜絕對唔係呢個地方比起地道印尼菜味道更加複雜係西式印尼菜唔可以話唔好味但係印尼華僑去嘅一定會大失所望適合與鬼佬同行沙嗲有普通嘅豬肉同海鮮竟然有牛舌咁我決定要牛舌牛舌口感煙煙韌韌入口即溶醬汁好明顯就唔係印尼味有少少cream味如果用椰奶可能會更加突出炒麵亦然係非常好好味有啲咖哩 但我唔係好鍾意入面嗰啲菜麵條真係可以做到印尼嗰隻彈牙湯就唔洗講啦已經係冬陰功乳鴿都算正宗亦都做到 乳鴿應有嘅鬆軟口感 有個臭豆魚都好好食zombie cocktail 酒精有啲過勁但係我嫌啲cocktail有啲太甜服務唔錯但係我叫靚仔攞隻杯畀我嘅時候嗰隻杯竟然係污糟嘅

上個週末,我來到西營盤第三街上度假feel濃濃的Potato Head,享受了一個休閒輕鬆好時光。Potato Head一站有齊餐廳、咖啡室、精品擺設與服裝店,以及還有我們臨離開前的驚喜發現music room。要不是幼稚園的招牌和鐵閘仍保留著,我真想像不到眼前這時尚型格的lifestyle space原來前身是間幼稚園呢!來到Potato Head,首先會在入口當眼位置見到咖啡店 I Love You So Coffee。而在咖啡店對面是服裝與擺設等的生活精品店Canaan。接著就來到裝修摩登時尚、又帶點熱帶風情的酒吧部份。中午時分自然光充裕,感覺分外清新,真想在沙發上懶洋洋輕鬆渡過整個下午呢~而藍色布簾後就是印尼餐廳Kaum,亦即是這日我們吃午餐的地方。我的目光被牆上與天花板的印尼Torajan傳統手雕工藝裝飾吸引了!每一片都是獨特的,加上地上的印尼特色地毯,氣氛時尚之餘也帶濃濃的印尼度假風情。Kaum餐廳主要分成2個部份 - 氣氛較熱鬧的長枱與面對開放式廚房的吧枱座位,而另一邊的用餐區就以散枱為主,想自己幾個朋友獨佔一張枱方便傾計就坐這邊吧。在這環境下,最好就是先來一杯熱帶風情的

餐廳以「Kaum」,即印尼語部落的意思,為店名,大概想說出這裡供應的印尼菜會用多個不同印尼部落的傳統特色手法烹調。要知道印尼是由1萬多近2萬個島嶼組成,當中單是民族部落都超過600個,但其實不同地區的印尼菜都會各有特色與風味(就像中菜,南方、北方各不同省市也有自己的風味特色)。因此就如惹味的參巴醬,不同的印尼部落、區域都有自己的特色recipe。在Kaum有供應多款參巴醬,以配搭不同菜式。

至於主菜,我們吃了這道賣相有點像中式樟茶鴨的Bebek Goreng ($258)。炸過後的鴨皮香脆而肉質結實,本身已經味道不錯。不過配搭起加入了香甜榴蓮肉做的Sambal Tempoyak參巴醬,沒想到辣椒、榴蓮與鴨肉是可以如此夾得來,味道很有驚喜!

Tumis keciwis dengan taoco pekalongan ($80),小椰菜苗炒得爽脆惹味,與茄子同樣伴飯一流。值得一提是這裡的白飯 ($28) 加入了香茅、薑與香草等煮,加上煮得質感軟硬適中,就算淨吃幾口白飯也覺得好吃呢。

We had a wonderful meal at Kaum last night with my Indonesian friends and they also loved the food very much. Great atmosphere and place was packed until very late. Not suitable if you are planning to have romantic, quiet evening out since the place could be quite noisy. We are seated right next to the kitchen which may explain why. We loved the Crispy Suckling Pig, Pork Belly cooked in Bamboo and herbs. Tuna tartar marinated with coconut oil and lime was also awesome. Will definitely be back so

Forget about the positioning of the restaurant (contem, fusion, what not...),given this is an Indonesian cuisine, there are typical dishes, such as Gado Gado, satays, Nasi Goreng etc., on which you will have certain level of expectation.  I mean Nasi Goreng, it's a dish that I used to order from room service when I went on a business trip and didn't know what to order.  It's a dish that can't really go TOO wrong.  But, the Nasi Goreng we had last Saturday, was burnt (and thus VERY bitter) and su

Forget about the positioning of the restaurant (contem, fusion, what not...),given this is an Indonesian cuisine, there are typical dishes, such as Gado Gado, satays, Nasi Goreng etc., on which you will have certain level of expectation.  I mean Nasi Goreng, it's a dish that I used to order from room service when I went on a business trip and didn't know what to order.  It's a dish that can't really go TOO wrong.  But, the Nasi Goreng we had last Saturday, was burnt (and thus VERY bitter) and super dry.  The satays we had were like jerkies.  For the price they charged, it's not worth another try.

Drink-wise, if you don't mind the price (around HK$120 for a cocktail), the bar environment, although a bit crowded, feels alright for pre or post dinner drink venue.

My Hong Kong friend felt adventurous of trying Indonesian food at first but she really loved it! Not to mention the services Kaum provided were excellent with some local and Indonesian bartenders and waitresses who always served you with smile. Also, we enjoyed talking to the cheerful Manager Assistant Edward with a pretty comprehensive description about the menus. It was an outstanding experience. We will definitely come back. Next time I want to try their Ikan Bakar (char-grilled fish) so bad!
