這日中午太座與她的大姊約食晏,經好友介紹選擇了這家店,只因中午不想食太重,原本諗著食半自助午餐的沙律和湯做晏,當中都不會有什麼特別東西可吃到,但估不到竟然半自助午餐都有風腿食。當天我主要都是食沙律和飲湯,沙律中我覺得最新鮮的是火箭菜,個人就特別喜愛它帶有半點苦澀味,入口清新,味道回甘,而另一美味食品就是藍芝士,味道濃郁,口感香軟。最大的驚喜是百多元的沙律加湯自助餐,竟然有風腿供應任食,而風腿味道甘香,還可以伴蜜瓜一齊食,美味甘香,清新咸鮮,其實全部沙律材料都非常新鮮,上述的只是幾款個人覺得最出色的。當天的湯是野菌濃湯,味道清淡而甜美,又充滿菇菌的濃香,口感稀杰合適,當中還食到一點點的菌微粒,食得出是用原材料打爛的正宗西式湯做法。我們三人只叫了一份主菜 - 牛排作為嚐試,牛排比想象中細件,但也算做到我們的要求五成熟,牛排表面淋上特制的香草蓉汁醬,清香可口,牛排本身牛味十足,入口鬆軟之餘又有彈性,口感不錯,另外伴碟的薯條也炸得非常香脆,入口外脆內軟,薯味香濃,可以感受到脆口之餘,又食到薯仔本身那種粉滑的口感。

Adding $40 you can get an entree of Grilled Rib Eye steak which is served with broccolli, carrots and bearnaise sauce. The price does sound very appealing since it's only $40 more. But I guess you get what you pay for. The beef was chewy and overly salted and doesn't taste fresh at all. It's like beef that has been marinated in sauce for too long. The slice was very thin and definitely did not satisfy my cravings for a good piece of meat. This is definitely a bad entree choice if I were to come again.

Then the lunch set came with a choice of tea or coffee. There were very limited choices for tea (earl grey, green tea) and only black coffee. I decided on having a cup of earl grey and it was brought to me with the tea bag and a cup of hot water. This made me feel like I was in a very cheap hk cafe that serves bad food. The water was also not very hot as well.

Common room has a very nice ambiance, but the quality of the food served at lunch totally did not live up to the restaurant. Their lunch menu definitely needs to add some new elements in order to compete with all the surrounding competitions.

(3) The boys behind the Privé Group are not only party animals, they certainly love their food too, and many of Common Room's new dishes have been inspired by their recent international travels. The Pulled Pork Poutine ($98) was as good as what you would find in Canada or the USA! The sauce, a mixture of melted cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce, was explosively flavourful yet not overly greasy, and the pork had an impressive smokiness.

(4) The Portobello Mushroom Sliders ($98) were as delicious as any beef burger, minus the meat. The deep-fried portobello mushrooms were exquisitely juicy, and the Gruyère cheese, caramelised onions and avocado made it extra enjoyable.

(6) Not many restaurants in Hong Kong serve lobster rolls, so I knew that the Madison Lobster Roll ($138) was a must-order for me, and I was not disapppointed! There was a generous amount of lobster meat in the roll, and the paprika and lemon juice accentuated the lobster's irresistable flavours. I appreciated how there wasn't too much dressing to drown out the lobster, and the lightly buttered bun was fluffy and delicious.

(8) Even though this entertainment group is mainly run by men, they do know how to create drinks and desserts to please the ladies. This Bailey's & Coffee Cheese Cake will make a girl squeal in joy - the Bailey's and coffee flavours were perfectly balanced and worked surprisingly well in a cheese cake. It was sheer deliciousness!

Meaty, sweet and fresh lobster in the middle, seasoned by plain lemon juice and paprika.

For drinks I had the AIRMAIL which had Aged rum, honey, fresh lime juice, champagne and orange flower water.
The name AIRMAIL was so classic because these days people don't send letters and with the internet you don't need to send airmail.
When it arrived, there was folded paper plane on the drink which really represented the cocktail.
The drink was nice and strong to start you off in party mood!

Very impressed with Common Room. The food we tried were delicious and I enjoyed the 'Kiss from a Rose'. The only down side would be that the tables are too close together and we could hear what the table behind us was talking about.

First we ordered the grilled shrimp poutine. The sauce was flavourful, with both truffle and cheese flavour. The shrimp was tasty but lacked in size.

最終我選了名為 It's Peachy 的雞尾酒,淺黃的色澤是混合了 Vodka、Peach Liqueur、Fresh Lemon Juice 和 Homemade Peach Syrup,面層配上白色的蛋白泡沫,中間四方形透明的是一冰塊,再襯上橙黃色的桃肉裝飾,感覺還不錯。

細嚐了幾口,酒的份量還可以,甜度恰好,但 Peach 的味道則不夠明顯,與主題有著落差,味道只屬一般!

而 Porcini Mushroom Farfalle 醬汁很暢滑,牛肝菌香氣亦甚豐濃,加上 Farfalle 嚼勁恰好,整體要比 Arrabiatta Penne 出色多,可是此食味一般意大利餐廳亦能及上,不見其獨突之處。

經過是次的嘗試,Common Room 在心目中與真實的印象有著相當大距離的差別,原來一向認定極為特別的Common Room,其實只是平平無奇.............只好慨嘆一句,It's truly Common!

Other Info. : 老公的同事也曾到過 Common Room,原來他跟我一樣也不喜歡其 Service,相信 Common Room 有必要要就女侍應的服務態度重新評估。

ses varying textures and tastes that simply work well together. The octopus is tender and complements the "crunch" the taco piece at the bottom provides. The spices used along with the mango and cucumber yogurt creates an interesting taste that you will well remember.

We tried something new this time, figs with Goat Cheese. The figs were fresh and sweet, the cheese soft and pungent. Would definitely order this dish again.

The macaroni & cheese is a usual favourite for others, but if you fear foods that are too creamy, perhaps sticking to a couple of spoonfulls will suffice.

I am not a chocolate fan but I definitely had my share of the molten chocolate pudding. Moist, not too sweet and with a very rich chocolate flavour, it would pass many chocolate skeptics' test.

Price wise, it is definitely not cheap. Common Room does not have happy hour prices but as a whole for atmosphere, good food, good drinks it definitely possesses all these for a well-rounded fun evening.

I've been here many times for after dinner drinks, and I've always felt comfortable at Common Room. Make no mistake, there is nothing common about its design that makes it comfortable, but rather the deco has a lot of wood with a mixture of black and glass design. This place is 4,000 square feet with a rustic industrial chic gastrobar featureing a 31 feet long mixology glass and cast iron liquor library.

Coming here for dinner was slightly different. The lighting is much brighter and you really get to feel comfortable the moment you step in. It's neither extremely fancy or too casual and it gives a feeling that this is a place that people where people would enjoy sitting around. Kind of like a 'common room' in the school days.

The area is quite big with a very long bar table on the left of the restaurant, and communual wooden tables that fill out the rest of the area.

I realise I am quite harsh on these, but for something to reach a 5 it has to be absolutely perfect. A 5 means la crème de la crème of its type and category; my point of view is that there is no such thing as perfect in texture, taste, presentation, smell etc and a 5 is virtually impossible.
0-1: Horrific, inedible
1-2: Will not order it again, and it's below average
2-3: Average joe food. Many places can replicate or make this.
3-4: Quite good and tasty. The higher end of 3 represents that the dish is identifiable to the restaurant and has its own distinctive taste and I will consider ordering again.
4-4.9: Very very tasty and the flavours of the dish is unique to the restaurant. In particular in the mid to higher ends to the 4, the food is almost proprietor-level good.
5: Pure bliss and so perfect that it's inexpressible.

As one can see, its a scrumptious world-inspired menu that will be served tapas style. There are all sorts of classic food with their own added flavour. Menus marked with the Common room Logo 'CR', are labeled as Common Room Favs.

The drink menu is also comprehensive with many classic and contemporary cocktails. This iron liquor library also has a good list of wine (we had 2011 Cloudy bay Pinot Noir which isn't very common in HK) and whiskey (with whiskey from all over the world including Chivas 38 years, Yoishi 15 years etc.)

The pate, spiked with peppercorn and brandy, topped off with a fruity layer of jam was fabulous. The jar filled with pate was way more than enough for 4 people. The pate really delivered in that it was full of rich flavors and it was the perfect texture to spread on the homemade crostinis, which was also well made.  

The jar of pate is quite large, so expect to be very full from this.

Mac and cheese is so common and made easily, yet there is such a huge variation in the quality of a true mac and cheese. To me, mac and cheese doesn't neccessarily have to be fancy; it just has to really really good.

The mac and cheese served here used several types of cheese: Gruyere, Parmesan, and Gouda, topping it off with a large Buffalo Mozerlla cheese in the middle. The mixture of cheese gave a rich, and not overly thick flavour and texture of cheese that will make your tongue wanting for more. Especially if you're a Buffalo mozerlla lover, the chunk in the middle balances out the heavy flavours of the mixture with a light spongy touch. 
Another wonderful addition are the bread crumbs on top of the dish which gives a crunch and texture to the smooth creamy dish. I wouldn't exactly call this 'classic' way of making mac and cheese given the cheese choices, but it isn't overly fancy and they made it just right.

This is a dish I would order again, without a doubt.

The steak tartare was seasoned with mustard, vinegar, pepper, and topped with a raw egg on top which came with hommade crisps shaped like waffles. The presentation was simple but striking due to the combination of colours on the plate. 

The steak was very flavourful with an oozing amount of mustard and a touch of vinegar to cover enhance (and cover) the raw taste of the steak. It was a good mixture of flavours because the vinegar really brought out the flavours of the meat. There was nothing extraodinary about the steak tartare and some parts of the meat was too chewy to the point I couldn't swallow them.  

The homemade crisps were very thin almost like the waffle chips you can buy in the supermarket. They also don't make you feel like you're eating a drench of oil which was fantastic. However, after eating a few more of these, you will feel the 'heat' or 'fire' (热气) in the mouth.

The combination of the two together is both a hit and a miss, in my opinion. In terms of adding texture, I find the crisp to be the perfect complement, but it also misses in the flavour department. When I ate the dish, I wasn't quite sure if I should be eating them together or not.

The lobster risotto dominated its presentation with the big lobster head served on top its risotto. The dish was served with lobster chunks, cream, garlic and white wine as the basis of the sauce. The al dente risotto and the lobster chunks were quite good. However, aside from the lobster chunks, there wasn't too much lobster flavour anywhere else.

I also tried the lobster linguini which was served with spicy vegetables in a tomato based sauce. Turns out, the linguini was much spicier than we expected. The linguini was also al dente and the lobster was separately served unlike the risotto which had the lobster chunks mixed in the pasta.

Unless you are craving for lobster dishes, I wouldn't order these specifically as there are many many more delectable dishes on the menu.

The grliled shrimp poutine is one to be remembered at Common Room. Forget about the cocktails, and the vast iron cast library. The shrimp poutine is gook looking, mouth watering and irresistable.

Before I tasted the dish, I had assumed that only the top layer will have cheese and I would have to spread out the shrimp in small pieces so that I will have flavour to get through the stack of fries. Turns out, the phrase 'don't judge the book by its cover' applies.

The shrimp is sauteed to perfection, and it was marinated very simply.The shrimp tasted extremely fresh and the meat remained crisp.
Layered beneath the shrimp lies melted cheddar cheese and truffle sauce and stacks of french fries. This wonderful poutine was full of shrimp flavour through all of the fries because the sauce itself tasted like shrimp! Mixed in with cheddar cheese and a hint of truffle the sauce was made to perfection. As the sauce was thick, the fries remained crisp even after some time (well, it's also possible that we finished it so quickly that there was no chance for the fries to get soggy).

This dish is unique and when I revisit this restaurant, it would be the first thing I would order even before I get seated.

The Wagyu foie gras burger also comes with carmelised onions, arugula and balsamic reduction (on the foie gras).

The flavours were blissfully sweet (from the foie gras balsamic glazing and the carmelised onions), and guilty oily (from the wagyu fat and the foie gras oil). It tasted like I expected, and it's executed very well. 

There are other places that serves this as well, hence the slight knock on the ratings. I would respectfully order this again nonetheless!

**************************Service******************************

The overall service varies from waiter to waiter. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and we were served with drinks quickly. Most of the staff was friendly but not extremely informative in terms of their food offerings. They knew what the food entails but not all staffs were clear on how it was cooked. 

However, there was one particular staff that was extremely rude, even to the point of insulting the dinner guests. To give an abridged anecdote, one of the dinner guests asked whether if it was a good idea to add the Wagyu Foie Gras Burger, with which the staff replied you're too fat for it (in a condescending tone). Throughout, this staff served us several times during the dinner and each time she came in with an attitude.

In the end, this is not a fine-dine restaurant, and perhaps I was expecting too much because the food was excellent. Yet, the one particular staff made the meal quite unpleasant. 


***************************Conclusion**************************
This is not only a great hang out place at night, but it is also a great place to have delectable favorite classic foods that's done right. Things are in small portions which allows you to eat a variety of things.

From the wonderful mac and cheese to the memorable shrimp poutine, this is a place to remember. However, for the noisy environment and the non-fine dining set up, you're really only paying for the food and the selection of cocktails. 

I would recommend this restaurant for anyone, in particular for those who plan to have drinks after a good meal!

I would recommend Kiss from a Rose as you can see the pink foam is beautifully done and tastes very sweet to complement the base. 整體來講, 這裡的午餐是幾抵食的, $138就能夠吃到款式齊全, 新鮮而有水準的antipasti semi-buffet. 如果有食力的朋友, 加$40就能夠吃到一客主菜, 如我們是日吃的肉眼扒也是令人滿意的. 服務方面, 店員態度友善, 收碟速度也幾快. 加上這裡的環境實在不俗, 在這裡吃一個優質的午餐才再繼續下午的工作, 實是為自己加力的好方法.

This gastrobar is located on Wo On Lane where Casa Lounge used to be, and only soft-opened on 12 April 2013, with its grand opening due to happen in a few weeks' time. Common Room has a stylish yet subtly luxurious decor - the use of wooden surfaces complements its cosy set-up, and there is a small outdoor terrace which is uniquely decorated with reclaimed ship wood.

As its name "Common Room" suggests, this place is a destination to relax and mingle with your friends, so there are communal tables in the dining area and all the tapas on the menu are in a sharing style. Besides their enticing selection of international tapas, you should also look out for their funky molecular drinks, meticulously prepared by the gastrobar's three top mixologists.

(1) Knowing how much I loved a rose ice cream that I recently had at another restaurant, my friend suggested that I try the Kiss from a Rose ($105), a pretty cocktail which was topped with some homemade rose foam and elegantly decorated with a rose petal. Whatever funky molecular technique was used, it obviously worked as the foam, which had a consistency similar to that of beaten egg white, tasted incredibly rosy! The cocktail was made with vodka, lychee liqueur, fresh lychee and a dash of lemon juice, and the alluring sweetness and fruitiness of it worked like magic for me.

(2) Our first dish, Sweet Potato Fries ($58), set the bar high for our meal. Made with sweet potatoes, the fries were enticingly sweet, and the surface was beautifully light and crispy. Served with some homemade chipotle buttermilk aioli, this dish was an instant addiction.

(3) I have never tried Tandoori Octopus ($115) before, but after my first bite it was already in my good books. The tandoori had a gorgeously firm and smooth texture, and the touch of sumac gave it a kick. It was served with mango and some fresh raita on a piece of tostada.

(4) The tapas at this gastrobar were meant to be shared, but I wasn't sure at all that I wanted to share the Wagyu Foie Gras Burgers ($98). The burger patty was juicy, and there was a very decent chunk of foie gras in it - not bad for $98! A drizzle of balsamic reduction added a hint of sourness to cut through the fattiness of the burger.

(5) Rustically presented on a wooden antipasti board, the Chicken Liver and Foie Gras Pate ($128) was a mellow and delightful dish. The pate had a good flavour, which was spiked by some peppercorn and brandy.

(6) The Classic Mac + Cheese ($98) was exactly how I wanted it to be. Daringly garlicky, the mac and cheese was also superbly cheesy - buffalo mozzarella, gruyere, parmesan and gouda were used to make this little bowl of goodness, and it was topped with bread crumbs which added an element of crunch. Don't even think about ordering this if you don't love cheese!

Having sampled a cocktail and a few tapas at this new baby in Central, I was impressed both by the playfulness and creativity of the menu and by the kitchen's faultless execution of it. Seeing how this is a sleek, charming venue that serves a selection of mouthwatering food, my biggest concern right now is that it will soon get as packed as Levels on a Saturday night!
