After eating a weekend lunch here about a year ago, i was so on the fence about Nhau that I decided to hold off on writing a review. Fortunately we found a massive 50% app discount for a Sunday lunch, so had the chance to try it again. Located in one of the worst locations for a mid-upscale restaurant in HK; hidden off a small side street in Sheung wan (near Blue Supreme), next to an old repair shop, it's a testament to its popularity that Nhau has seemingly survived this first phase of the pandemic.

While they are described quite differently on the menu, in reality these two dishes are 85% identical. From the shredded veg to their extremely oily salty/sour salad dressing; it was like when you go to the buffet table 2x for a salad, but add something different as a topping. Totally bizarre and more than a bit lazy, especially as the server didn't mention anything when we ordered both. The salads themselves are ruined by the overly oily dressing - every bite feels coated in oil, but taste-wise they are okay for a light starter; just make sure you get the dressing on the side. There's very little to recommend one over the other, so choose whichever topping you prefer.

These are pretty tasty: strongly but not excessively marinated pork, given some real pop from the Sriracha mayo. They're tasty but the three bite-size tacos are expensive for $120. You'll want two each, but a single order (3 tacos) doesn't cut it for 2 people, so be ready to split them

A dish that will always keep Nhau relevant - an entire roast spring chicken with vermicelli and lettuce to wrap it with. The chicken is perfectly roasted, so it remains juicy while the skin is flavorful and crunchy . I love the marinade they use - some kind of lemongrass-herb blend, giving the bird a salty/herby/roasted flavor all around. The green herb sauce is phenomenal as well (reminds me of Indian mint chutney), and i polished off three dishes of it in finishing the chicken. An absolute must-order and solid at $200

With the app discount, our lunch was less than $500, a value for the amount of food we had, even if some of the dishes weren't great. However, at full price (just under 1k), it's completely not worth it. 

The first time we went, there was more innovation and excitement in the menu, with a certain standard of execution,  even if some were hit and miss. Now, even the boring dishes they can't really get right - squid/jellyfish salads and deepfried prawns  are no-brainers, but turned out quite mediocre.  The chicken is reliably amazing, and at a discount, the banh mi tacos are pretty tasty. A solid meal on an app discount would actually be the chicken and tacos alone. That combo doesn't make a real restaurant though, so no choice but to give this place an OK (on the low side) for now. Hope the quality and menu pick up in the future.

Came here on a Saturday for a late lunch.Staff is super friendly and patiently explaining to us what are the ingredients in each dish! The spring roll is yummy and it tastes better with the lettuce! The soft shell crab is yummy too as it’s fried to perfect. The mini taco is abit too small for me but it is interesting to see how they are inspired to serve it like a mini taco. The chicken dish is a MUST to order as it tastes so good with all the sauce and the herbs in it !

Third time here and the good news is Chef Que brought in a new manager that used to work for him. And what a world of difference from service perspective !!! Vicky was attentive, friendly and helpful.

Menu had a few new dishes. And we tried a couple of them:

Managatsuo (White pomfret) tartare - fish was tender and I liked the crispy fish skin that added texture to the dish. The dressing was refreshing and complex. Not your run of the mill fish sauce dressing.
Tiger prawns green papaya salad - great salad with again unique dressing that was just yummy. Shrimp was not overcooked.

Rest of the dishes were repeats and they were just as delicious. Loved the spring roll (crispy and not oily). Both the fried chicken and the grilled chicken were juicy, tender and tasty. The tacos skin was soft and the topping was true to bahn mi with pickled veggies. Cauliflower and pork floss went well together !! It gave the cauliflower extra layer of savory flavor. The beef brisket noodles was average. Meat was tender but I think it needed a bit more seasoning. It tasted kind of blend when mixed with the rice noodles.

Ice cream at the end was surprisingly “exceptional”. Didn’t ordered last few visits because I ordered too much food. They were all unique with a twist of texture by adding different elements to them. I fully appreciate the efforts and the creativity !

Ordered all three flavors to share amongst six of us. Loved the silky smooth banana panna cotta beneath the salted caramel ice cream (indeed salted). The pandan ice cream had intense pandan flavor. Loved the sticky rice honeycomb cake and the crispy puffed rice and basil meringues toppings. The sweet corn ice cream was true to its name and it was like having a corn on the cob without the cob .... the coconut mochi and the crispy tapioca chip added extra touch to the already very creamy ice cream !

Worth mentioning the new cocktails as well. A friend ordered the “Mekong Mary”. Never thought garlic and a dash of fish sauce would go well with vodka ..... 👍 I had a sip and loved it.

Read about Nhau on Cathay Pacific’s inflight menu a while ago, finally got a chance to visit them last night.

The restaurant is well hidden in an alley next to Ladder Street, it’s quite hard to locate I would say.

Nhau serves contemporary Vietnamese cuisine which is not too strong in taste but with the fresh ingredients used, all the dishes are very well balanced and it was such a delightful dinner.

Cons: no online reservation, no one picks up the phone until late in the afternoon, reservation staff is aggressive about their two seatings policy, you are told in no uncertain terms that it doesn’t matter what time you come, you have to leave by 9pm for second seating. Very unwelcoming reservation staff. At the restaurant, the wait staff refused to recommend dishes, very odd seeing that it was our first time there. Wait staff did not take the time to explain the dishes which I think is necessary for some of the dishes to fully appreciate them because they are not your generic run-of-the-mill dishes. We had to keep asking them what everything was. We are a fan of Chef Que but there were no standout dishes.

What we ordered:

Environment: More like a chatroom, but overall cosy, can either sit at the bar and enjoy some cocktails, or at the table enjoy the dishes

Food: most impressed by the tartare. One may not expect the crispy cloudlike "rice cake" to actually be fried frozen sliced beef tendon. The whole dish is made of beef (tartare), beef (floss on top) and beef (fried tendon). Another impressive dish is the grilled spring chicken - tender meat and good timing; better request an encore on fish salt with lime juice - refreshing and not salty at all which goes well with the chicken.

Overall: Most dishes come with fish sauces, and pair well with fish sauces. Yet, not getting the strong fish sauce smell you would expect in Vietnamese restaurants. Hidden location, yet do expect full of chatters and spiciness (and no pho for some special reasons)!

Avoid going at all cost. First, the staff messed up my reservation and did not even attempt to do anything to rectify their mistakes (note that it's a plural, they made mistakes after mistakes on my reservation).  And the person who supposedly is the manager is extremely incompetent.  You can definitely get better service in Shake Shack than here. None of the staff seems to know what they're doing or supposed to do. When the service is terrible, food is only mediocre, environment is underwhelmin

You can definitely get better service in Shake Shack than here. None of the staff seems to know what they're doing or supposed to do.

tl;drGreat food, good service.The location of the restaurant is a bit bizarre. I actually thought that google maps is playing tricks on me. Eventually i did reach my destination to find a very cosy and warm looking restaurant. I ve made a reservation beforehand and i was seated immediately. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable and the service was quick. I ordered the fried chicken with sriracha sauce. Even though im not used to spicy food it was exquisite! My buddy ordered beef tartare.

I ve made a reservation beforehand and i was seated immediately. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable and the service was quick. I ordered the fried chicken with sriracha sauce. Even though im not used to spicy food it was exquisite! My buddy ordered beef tartare. i didnt try it personally but it looked good and he completely devoured it. The star of the dinner was definitely the salty caramel coconut ice cream. It gave me a foodgasm! For the above we paid around 400$. To conclude, im definitely coming back again.
