We have been trying to get a booking at Birdie for weeks now, and this time, we succeeded by calling on Monday for a Thursday 8pm spot; i couldn't tell you another yakitori spot in HK that gets this kind of attention. I get it though; on the top floor of the uber-hip H Code Japanese restaurant/bar complex, its part of the 298 Nikuya family, and is izakaya-food polished to a mirror shine. Cool interior, tight, focused menu, full drinks list, it's built to impress. They're not related, but it actually reminds me a lot of Nojo on the ground floor of H Code; from the lighting to the menu. Service was knowledgeable and attentive, and i liked how they staggered the food a bit rather than rushing everything out like a lot of izakayas do.

If you like pure tofu, you'll enjoy this dish, which is nothing more than fried (lightly and beautifully it must be said) tofu. The garnish adds some crispiness and complexity, but not much flavor. No surprises here.

Potato Salad

I have probably mentioned how I always order potato salad at izakayas - it's like my shrimp dumpling (har kow) test for Japanese casual eateries. Birdie has an excellent potato salad - diced cucumbers and unmashed potato chunks give it some varied texture, and the onsen egg on top was icing. Seasoning is perfect, and the mayo was not heavy-handed, leaving it chunky but not dry.

Love how they provide warm, toasted bread along with this pretty great pate. Creamy and rich, but not gamey. Nothing surprising, but If you like pate this is solid.

All average to above-average yakitori, though I wish they gave the option of salt/sauce (shio/tare). We prefer salt in almost every case, and they add to that preference by overdoing it on the sauce in virtually every case. The chicken skin was the one exception, as it was dripping in sauce yet was still crispy and not overwhelmed. The liver was too saucy for me, while the gizzard was perfectly cooked (just salted thank god) and bouncy. I forgot to take a picture of the chicken thigh, but it's a must-order; salted and incredibly juicy, it's what grilled chicken is supposed to taste like.

Leeks with Pork / Pancetta with Mozzarella

The pork with leeks were drenched in sauce and a bit chewy, so I'd probably avoid that. However, to my everlasting surprise, the pancetta and cheese really works. It's a firm, dry mozzarella, so even after grillingit retains some bite, providing a foundation for the bacon to work its salty magic. The cheese doesn't ooze away, and while it's not tough, you'll chew through it several times wondering how it's still in one piece. It's a less explosive, less tart version of bacon-wrapped tomatoes.

Both of these soaked in sauce, though they come out okay. The tsukune mixture itself seems to have egg added to it, making it fluffier and less-dense texture than usual chicken meatballs. No raw egg on the side for that reason.

Grilled Riceball

Expensive at 40$ but they put a lot of time into grilling it, giving it a wonderful, even crunch all-around. Wrapped with 2 shiso leaves, I'm not sure it's worth the price but it's definitely good.

Overall, Birdie isn't bad. Not sure why they feel like bathing yakitori in sauce is a thing,  but apart from that, the food is above average. Nothing made me go "wow," but they execute their dishes confidently and with some style. The menu is well thought out, with an interesting variety of both grilled items and appetizers. In terms of pricing, you'll need to order more than you think; we ate a fried chicken sandwich at The Chicken Bar downstairs just before dinner, and we were still barely satisfied after we finished. Our meal came out to 850 for the 2 of us with 1 drink each - I'd imagine for a full meal and 2-3 drinks each, we're talking about 600-700 pp, though you can probably get away with 500 if you're not drinking much. I'm not sure a meal at Birdie is worth that much, and with how hard it is to get a reservation, I rate it as a solid yakitori joint in a city full of solid yakitori joints. Give it a shot if you're a fan of kushiyaki, but maybe when the lines die down... it's not worth the fight.

Food was nice here but a bit pricey. I like all of their skewers!! It was so good, they matched the food with the right sauces and I can feel that they used their heart to grill the food. Not like those outside just grill quickly and gave the food to you.If they have discount in the future, I will come back again.Overall, it was a nice one!!!

It wasn’t until the very end till I realized the service wasn’t that great. So here’s the story:My booking time was scheduled to be from 6pm-8pm. However, as I just finished all the food, the waiters asked if I still wanted to order or else they will have to cut our booking time early (at the time it was only about 7ish pm). Don’t get me wrong, the waiters were good in terms of servicing the table; but what happened at the end? Regardless, even though the chicken skewers were cooked to perfectio

Regardless, even though the chicken skewers were cooked to perfection, I do think there are better yakitori places. Other than the chicken skewers, the rest were average and most were on the salty side of things.

朋友圈內都介紹這家日本燒鳥店位置在石板街裏面的新大廈9樓J.boroski 的對面時段分為六點至八點以及八點至10點燒爐在bar 裏面,特別升高了,抽油煙機很大,足夠吸走串燒的油煙,所以全程坐了兩小時也不覺得頭髮有臭味。這是我很欣賞的。坐下來我們點了雞皮、雞腎、雞尾、雞翼及雞大腿,每道菜都很有heart。特別應該一讚的是雞尾燒得特別脆特別juicy 然後店員特別介紹親子丼,一般我都不會吃但難得來到日本進口雞肉的專門店就即管一試,通常做親子丼都是用比較不好吃的部份,但這裏完全不一樣,每口雞肉都有軟筋,很香、很有咬口,蛋汁也特別處理過真的好好味呀! 人均消費大約$800一個人

我們來吃串燒,便不浪費任何時間和胃口,只點串燒!


在中環吃日式串燒,這店價錢尚算公道,倘若加上環境、食物質素和師傅的功架,可以說是物有所值!唯一美中不足之處是由於食物準備需時,要在兩小時內交枱,吃起來便不禁感到有點急促!

We were given two hours upon booking which is fine and acceptable. BUT not when we explicitly told our server at first order that when our items come, if we like it, we would order again....and not only did one item not come till 20 mins before 9pm which is when we were already reminded repeatedly (not once) our table was up at 9pm, but the servers were rude, defensive, unapologetic. As we were trying to explain that we knew it was almost 9 but their food just came, they still had to rush and re

Who rushes your customers like that and even if you do, you don’t expect them to gobble up their food close to the time you expect them to leave when you only served them close to the time you want them to. One of the servers even told one of us to calm down 😠. What kind of service is that? AND there was no personal service or apology from any manager and no remorse on our bill.

聽說這是新開的日式串燒店,趁五一假期馬上跟女朋友來試試。店面不大,我選了坐吧台,可以一邊看師傅工作一邊吃。從餐牌看來,主打雞不同的部位,牛﹑豬﹑蔬菜的種類不多。服務態度親切有效率,不過不是每個店員都會說中文。一個詞來形容︰好吃!! 整體來說食材不錯,而且燒烤手法高明,沒有任何一樣食物會over cook。調味亦十分出色,用鹽份量精準,能讓你吃出肉的鮮味。

I've heard many great things about the other restaurants owned by the same group but unfortunately never had chance to try their beef or pork shop but that's okay, we can start with chicken first. In a new building near Iron Fairies, the restaurant is quite nicely decorated. That's the reception area. Two of the chefs are Japanese and when I went a lot of the customers are also Japanese. Usually when that happens we can conclude that it's probably more authentic.

Their potato salad. The egg was delicious, the mashed potato was pretty good too as it will never go wrong with bacon. The magical touch was probably the wasabi in the potato (I didn't confirm with them but it tasted like so).

Chicken breast with coriander was very nice too. It's a bit spicy with hints of Korean spices. A pretty smart way to make chicken breast not so boring!

And then the most common yet important dish in Yakitori, the Tsukune minced chicken stick. This was pretty nice and probably one of the best in town but I personally like yardbird's chicken stick a little more.

In conclusion:
- definitely one of the best yakitori in town
- price to quality ratio is quite high
- chicken specialist, don't expect to order other stuff here

Definitely worth trying and I will return. Only issue was that the food come in a rather strange pattern and some of the yakitori was a little slow.

📝birdie的確帶給我不少驚喜,因為這裏有幾串串燒竟然做得比我最愛的toritama更好吃,超級推薦各位一嘗!

睇完報道,一間有日本人廚師主理的中環串燒店,新開張,即管去試吓。一進入店內,有半數都是日本人,就知道這一間餐廳應該不錯。還有新店開張不收開瓶費,太好了!店舖內有一個小小的露台,方便客人出去呼吸。他們的串燒已雞為主,他們的雞是日本貨整個餐牌內的雞串燒我們也order,除了免治雞肉串有點失色,其他所有雞的串燒也非常好吃素菜,我們只是order了秋葵串和菇,質素也十分好。和牛崩沙腩串,太多醬汁,我不太喜歡,因為完全蓋過食物本身的味道。豚五花腩生菜卷,不過不失燒飯團,有芝麻葉包着,火候控制得很好,外脆內軟親子丼,味到調校得很好,但有少少過濕。整體來說,他們的雞肉串極之出色兩位日本廚師也非常親切有機會一定會再嚟價錢亦十分合理
