The cakes are extremely overpriced and had shrink in size since my las visit. The quality of the food was bad, especially the cakes. Even a piece of white bread taste better than the opera cake.The counter was slow and the service was bad. The waitress kept ignoring me when I told her to get me a fork.

這家 Epoch 都寫過幾次了, 主要都是吃甜食, 還有漏網之魚, 補兩筆啦。一年前的 Seared Tuna Salad 吞拿魚輕烤過, 加點黑胡椒, 幾惹味; 沙律菜都幾新鮮, 還有各式甜椒和車厘茄, 加埋 Seafood Chowder (海鮮不多但其實幾 creamy 口架), 就是一頓輕盈的 OL 午餐了。圖 4 的蛋糕叫 Mango Dream, 不知轉了蛋糕甜品 Menu 之後還有沒有這個, 是芒果 mousse、芒果忌廉、芒果粒配海綿餅底。整件黃澄澄的蛋糕爆發著芒果味, 配齋啡是不俗的, 只是咖啡的水準實在是太飄忽了。也吃過這裡的早餐, 選擇不少的, 不過一是不吃, 要吃就要來大的, 就是不記得叫 Big Breakfast 還是 Full Breakfast 或是 English Breakfast 的早晨全餐, 好像是 $45 左右吧。English Breakfast 吧, 因為我在吃的時候, 有位跟我吃同一款早餐的女士正在跟服務生爭論何謂英式早餐, 她說欠了些東西 (記不起是什麼了) 所以不可以稱為 English Breakfast, 覺得貨不對辦云云...]

也吃過這裡的早餐, 選擇不少的, 不過一是不吃, 要吃就要來大的, 就是不記得叫 Big Breakfast 還是 Full Breakfast 或是 English Breakfast 的早晨全餐, 好像是 $45 左右吧。

不計較稱謂的話, 其實這個早餐是挺好吃的, 早餐食品你想得到的都已包含在內 (有部分內容可以自選的), 基本的麵包、果醬、火腿、炒蛋, 最重要的還是英式早餐必有的茄汁焗豆! --> 所以那位女士在呱呱叫我也沒理她啦, 唉, 放鬆啲啦香港人!
最神奇的是竟然連薯條都有, 這樣的組合難食極有個譜 (其實是相當美味的, 我很久沒吃過這麼大份的早餐了), 胃口小的女生可以兩人分吃一客都夠吃啊!

反而一年後才有興趣試的 Chef's Spaghetti Carbonara ($62 set lunch price) 是此店的名物之一, 果然名不虛傳, 大大一隻金黃生蛋黃, 拌入均勻地掛上濃厚忌廉芝士汁的 al dente 意粉後, 簡直是人間美味也! 煙肉也下的慷慨, 也就不要問我有幾肥了呵呵呵 ~~~ 至多吃多兩啖鮮美的伴餐沙律囉!

至於咖啡, 還是神經刀的, 經驗所得, milk-based 的咖啡飲品是比純咖啡好得多的, 不知是 illy 咖啡的特性還是個別 barista 的分別了。

If there will be 2 or 3 Coffee Shops that I patron the most: Epoch @ Quarry Bay is probably one of them on a regular basis, the other being Coco Espresso near my office. Little known to outsiders is that Wanchai & Quarry Bay's EPOCH stores have slightly different ownership structures, as the Wanchai store is partly owned by an ex-HK actress, unlike this outlet. Most ONLY sell it due to its brandname, rather than truly appreciating its underlying flavour complexity nor understanding fully how 'illy' works. Unfortunately, this tends to give 'illy' a bad name! On the other hand, it really isn't easy to perfect either:

ESPRESSO -
Bad news 1st then! Served in a Double-shot Demitasse Cup by default, its rather difficult to score a great illy espresso here, or anywhere else for that matter!
You can get an average shot normally, but some of them are below-par at either wanchai or quarry bay outlets. Personally - please think about how SO MANY people either love or loathe 'illy' coffees without understanding why! The reason is because illy is one of the most versatile but complex blends ever experienced, its difficult to get it right, and one can extract whatever flavours you desire from its 9+ beans depending on settings and skillz. If you don't know how to extract it well enough though, you'll think its thin, acidic and smoky: Unworthy.
On the other hand, the few that can get it right on the odd occasions can't repeatedly maintain it either. On the extreme end? When done really really poorly, it somehow turns into a likeable coffee when added with milk. Most professional baristas won't touch 'illy' for a reason - they know it can be great but very rarely, and when extracted under strictest professional methods, its only good for half-a-day before it turns nasty, unpredictable and requires 'coaxing'. With this in mind, I sincerely believed that Epoch tried to do a decent job on average!


CAFFE LATTE & CAPPUCINO -
The Latte here is smooth and complex in layering but subtle - its illy's signature style but is often subdued, more exacerbated by the fact its usually unfresh by the time it reaches stores in HK cafes. Stronger here is the Cappucino version, as it carries less milk in the Ceramic cup: wonderfully complex on most occasions whether it is made by any of the residing male or female baristas. TRACY the gun-barista here has won the local 2009 HK BARISTA CHAMPIONSHIP and also competed in the AUSTRALASIAN BARISTA CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 AFTERWARDS, plus there were others here who competed. The average level of Coffee Making skillz here is really high - to me, everyone working here are knowledgeable and well trained, there aren't obvious Winners or Losers! If I were to gamble on a Coffee Team to win, much like others gamble on Football Teams, EPOCH @ QUARRY BAY would be my 1st pick! (The espressos' fluctuating qualities however, are probably half attributed to illy's inherent weakness & half attributable to the difficulty in understanding how to extract this blend properly, I suppose...
)

POACHED PEAR IN SECRET SPICES w/ CHOCOLATE SAUCE -
This is stuffed with Haagen Dazs vanilla ice-cream, served cold. Its flavour reminds me of mulled-wine, full of wintery spice flavours!

HOT FOOD -
Equally Impressive and not to be neglected is the Kitchen here!
The newly appointed French Consulting Chef on top of the existing French Pastry Chef has now designed specialty-dishes, rotated on daily or weekly basis. This sits in well on top of the interesting permanent Menu.
Dishes from Italian, Mediterranean to lesser-known dishes from Basque Country are seen on their LCD screen each day - its very refreshing and also why I now eat dinner here occassionally. Not everything works perfectly, but most of them are satisfying enough for the relatively low pricing policy. They even serve many styles of cheese fondues lately! A must-recommend is the Bolognese Spaghetti: slow-cooked, complex in depth, albeit minuitly different on each visit, its better than 98% of Italian restaurants out there!


CAKES -
Epoch has always impressed with its dessert selections, with a famous award-winning French Patissier over-looking their offerings. Some cakes work really well, some not as well, but its guaranteed always interesting! Like Paul Lafayet, their Cake selection works on a rotational basis and are moulded in a remote central location.... ! The 7 Layers Valrhona cake is well-reknowned, but the Napolean mille-feuille is often under-rated and better than many other cake shops. It has a rare, separate chocolatey top pastry layer, then moist custard sandwiched between normal buttery crisp pastry as contrast!

EPOCH TO ME, JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER BY THE WEEK, PARTICULARLY THE QUARRY BAY STORE! IT IS NOW ONE OF MY FAVOURITE RELAXING SPOTS AND YOU MIGHT JUST CATCH ME THERE READING MY PAPERS! THE ILLY COFFEE SERVED HERE HOWEVER OPENS A NEW CAN OF WORMS EVEN FOR THE VERY WELL-TRAINED BARISTA TEAM, ITS NOT SOMETHING THAT CAN BE CONQUERED EASILY.. LOW-MID '5'.

sunday 遲起身, lunch 都遲埋, 行去island east 附近o既 epoch試食. Tea time未到, 叫lunch set, 有pasta, salad 或 sandwich. 所有野食都有全份同半份簡. 不過唔知份量有幾大, 所以叫了全份tuna salad, $54 都幾貴, 不過d菜好新鮮, 加了 olive oil好滑, tuna半熟好味, 不過蔬菜款式唔, 依個價錢都幾貴. 餐湯係南瓜湯, 味道ok不過唔夠熱要扣分. +$10 有coffee, 不過無叫, illy coffee無咩特別.sis 叫了panini 夏威夷半份, HK$36 好好味喎, 夠熱, cheese 夠多, 脆脆的, perfect.

此處對Double Espresso又是用上裝Cappuccino的杯子來盛,真的有點衣不稱身之感,而份量就是剛好的五十毫升左右,至於味道如何?跟上回在灣仔喝的Ristretto一樣,Crema很薄,脂香嚴重不足,是咖啡豆不夠新鮮之過嗎?而咖啡的濃度以Espresso來說都算足夠,入口及嗅起來也是很香而充滿咖啡的甘味,但味道方面就不太複雜,而且醇厚度不足,簡單點可以說是跟灣仔店的很像,果然出於同門,用上了同一款咖啡豆,及同一培訓出來的員工。

Café Latte真的像極上回喝的那一杯,又是用上玻璃杯盛着,但今回的拉花形狀不是心形,而是模糊到極點的葉形拉花,咖啡嗅起來很有奶香,呷了一口面層的奶泡,奶泡層不厚而滑,表面平滑如鏡,奶的質地比較Creamy,真的如灣仔店的非常滑,咖啡順喉而帶出咖啡的甘香,很易入口很好喝,是一杯喝得人舒服的咖啡,與上回在灣仔店喝的味道很像,又是一杯像極Flat White的Café Latte。

在此店子歇了一會,就走下場吃晚飯了,這個聖誕真暢快。

初初見到個蒜茸薯仔湯上枱,青BB咁,以為不好飲,估不到又幾好飲喎

卡邦尼忌廉濃汁煙肉意粉很有芝士味,但又不太濃烈,鮮雞蛋與意粉攪拌後,味道剛剛好

檸檬雪芭和橙酒朱古力蛋糕都很好味

雖然每一樣份量都不多,但吃完此晚餐後,感到非常滿足

星期六同屋企人一齊去食dinner... 都算ok 啦~~ 個carbonara 都幾好食... 個長通粉就麻麻地啦~~但係o的甜品都算ok, 尤其係個7-layers chocolate cake... 我覺得好味呀~~ 可能係因為我鐘意食chocolate cake 啦~~~ 另外仲食o左拿破崙同fruit sponge.... 不過都係個7-layers chocolate cake 好食o的

A few months ago, I wasn't expecting much, but was treated with a cup of nice, thick and hot chocolate -- somewhat inferior but similar to what you'd get at Vero or Pascucci

This time, it was the other extreme, a cup of what I'd call 茶記 hot chocolate -- lukewarm, watery, very sweet but otherwise tasteless. Quite a shock. It was a wonder that Valrhona chocolate could be made so bland -- the chocolaty flavour was all gone

And I was charged $40 for such a cup of warm chocolate.

Maybe the owner and the staff of Epoch need to be reminded that it could take a thousand cup of perfect hot chocolate / coffee to build a reputation and a few disastrous ones to ruin it.

As a side note, it seemed that my locust friend's caffe latte wasn't any better.

P.S. Another disappointment was that when we visited, there was no crepe, no seven-layered chocolate cake and among all the desserts listed in the menu, only four were available. Duh.

完全無心機寫呢一篇食評, 事關實在太失望了.

喺拉麵店 (http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2046703) 行出來, 諗住飲杯咖啡 / Valrhona chocolate 兼食個 Valrhona chocolate crepe / 7-layer chocolate cake, 點知 1) 是日無 7-layer chocolate cake, 2) 甜品就只供應 4 款唔多吸引的
結果死死氣只叫了杯 caffe latte (medium 好似 $27). 朋友就如常飲熱 Valrhona chocolate (好似 $40).

先嚟 chocolate, 賣相一般, 好似有點稀, 飲落就不得了 -- 乜咁甜, 咁稀, 朱古力味又咁假的!? 完完全全係茶記「熱朱」的味道嚟0架喎
是否 "Valrhona" 不得而知, 但用水沖又唔落奶, 整杯咁嘅嘢仲要收人 $40, 咪玩啦!


用玻璃杯 serve 的 caffe latte 亦唔好得好多 -- 雖然 illy 品牌差極有個譜, 奶泡亦幼滑, 但咖啡味淡薄, 而最失敗就係呢杯嘢完全唔夠熱, 溫溫吞吞的 d 糖係攪極都唔溶, 感覺極級乞人憎


每人丟低約 $35, 離開時真係「星星月亮太陽」xyz 乜都出晒嚟, 唔係唔俾喊面呀嘛? 後會無期!

得知Varlhona 7-layer Cake獲得一眾巧克力迷的青睞,身為同好的我,在寒流下尋找巧克力的芳蹤。為了讓味蕾享受,特意逐層品嚐。有別一般巧克力「同胞」,只得味濃和柔軟。「她」集柔、潤、脆、香於一身,故能獨佔花魁,成為小民的至愛。再邀咖啡和雜誌作伴,在小店度過閒適。又得店員專業推介其他的「佳麗」,如oreo cheese cake及napoleon,相信邂逅有期。

最近煩惱問題多多,怎也下不到決定想不到解決的辦法,很想什麼也不理,今天來到這裡,我選擇了不停吃吃吃來逃避一下。難怪書說中國人以吃來選擇逃避問題,大概真的沒錯。大概 3 點多來到,整天什麼也沒吃,肚子餓到不得了,店員說午餐只去到 3 點,那我唯有叫下午茶好了。有兩款下午茶,一個是烤餅,另一個是甜品。我叫了一個夏威夷烤餅,主要以火腿和菠蘿做餡,來到的時候真的不錯。賣相不小,而且面頭感覺超多芝士,好像很好吃似的。切下去時真的不錯,餅底不厚,而且亦不會太硬,很易入口。有香的番茄和番茄醬,酸酸的很開胃。再說火腿和菠蘿的餡料也不少,芝士煙煙UNUN的,非常不錯。加$5要了杯Cappuccino,覺得細杯了一點點,很快就喝完了! 可是卻是不錯的,奶泡算很滑,而且也非常厚呢。表面有些可可粉,更添甜味,不過咖啡香倒是略嫌不夠了。吃完的時候,心情仍是很差,最後決定再要一個甜品。想了一會要了一件Opera,朱古力很香濃,而且還有淡淡的咖啡香。只是我覺得蛋糕濕了一點點,變得感覺怪怪的,但整體來說味道也是好吃的!看見有明星在影相做訪問,可是我想極也想不出他的名字。想不到在平日下午茶時段,這間店子也挺多人幫襯的,

朋友在東區上班, 乍聞這裡的甜品和環境不錯, 於是就選了一個星期五晚到這裡光顧.
經過一星期的工作, 大家一想到周末可以歇一歇, 不禁胃口大開.
在試甜品之前, 我點了一個oven-baked Italian pepperoni panini, 朋友就選了chef's spaghetti carbonara.

先說說panini的味道, 由於本人十分喜歡吃pizza, 所以這個焗panini正合我意!
它富有辣肉腸和芝士的香味, 但又不似連鎖薄餅店的pizza那麼油膩, 而且panini又很鬆軟!
可是份量對於我倆卻是多了少許, 如果dinner時段好像lunch time時有1/2 size供應就好了!

至於那個spaghetti carbonara, 我就認為一般而已.
我不曉得正宗意式的spaghetti carbonara是啥,
我只是覺得麵條硬了少許, 而且上桌時已經不暖, 有點像吃冷麵,
不過煙肉不太鹹, 尚算可以.

原以為之後的甜品是整晚的高潮所在,
怎料全店只剩下一件7-layer valrhona chocolate cake, 還要被人預訂了!!
我倆不禁大失所望......
不過經理 (?) 挺體貼, 看見我們那麼失望, 立刻安排一個店員介紹店裡還有甚麼甜品供應.
本來我想點chocolate crepes, 但店員又說店裡材料不夠, 沒有crepes可售 (!!!),
最後我們就點了raspberry warm chocolate cake.

其實這個所謂warm chocolate cake就是"朱古力心太軟",
蛋糕的質感還不錯, 外面不太硬, 裡面的朱古力fluid得來而又實在,
不過除了碟邊有些raspberry sauce, 恕我在蛋糕裡嚐不到raspberry的味道......
"心太軟"旁還有一個scoop的haagen-dazs vanilla ice-cream, 味道當然不俗!

總括而言, 這裡的panini和甜品不錯, 但pasta就如其他食友所說味道一般.
環境和職員服務態度也不錯, 可是不知為何很多desserts都不能供應.
如果想試某一種甜品, 看來要先打電話去查詢/預訂才可以!

坐車之前見過,現在黎開lee頭,所以食下!lunch大約1點到,店size不大,full曬甘制!本來想食cake,但餓啊,就食set辣肉腸panini,叫了full portion,原來half portion的一件其實都ok夠!味道像 pizza,即叫即做, 好味的沙律鮮味ok,有雞肉同d pasta,酸酸甜甜開胃之作coffee,不是特別的moncha/latte/etc.,所以不是太多野可以comment下次來時desser!!

從openrice認識這家餐廳, 於是在一個weekday的下午, 便專程前往嘗試一下, 由於我並不知道華蘭路是在哪兒, 故此也花了好一些時間才找到啊, 原來餐廳距離地鐵站是頗遠的. 由於當時我已十分飽, 故只飲了一支Sol而已, 但原來索價要40元, 很昂貴呢!!!!!! 這家餐廳的環境的確不錯, 很好坐, 但是位置無可否認是隔涉了一點了. 那一天我由六點多去到到七點多也只得很少客人, 到我離開時才有四位客人來吃晚飯, 侍應生基本上都好清閒, 以一間打開門做生意的餐廳來說, 這絕對不是一個好現象吧!!!!!! 由於是次我只是喝了一支Sol, 故基本上這不算得上是一篇食評, 只是寫下一次我幫襯這餐廳的經驗而已. 又, 看其他食家貼出這餐廳的意粉好像是蠻吸引的, 有機會也想嘗試一下, 不過, 這兒離地鐵站畢竟是較遠了!!!!!!
