One night we had chosen Friench food for gathering. It was recommended by one of my friends. The foods were very ex-oridinary and very delicious.This is the French style vegetable egg pie. It was my first time to eat that. It tasted very special. The cheese ball was crispy outside and creamy inside. Very good I am a cheese person. Wow..this one was very unexpected. All friends thought that was a grade A Beef or Sirloin something, but it was Iberico. It was very jucy and tender. This dish was the excellent food of the night.

We waited 20 mins for the attention from the bar an to order a drink. He acted like we did not exist after we sat down. Had a drink in the bar, then moved to the table. But although we booked a table a few days before, we we're put to a table next to the toilet. The restaurant is very small and not comfortable to sit in. we ordered the quiche of the day and French cold cut to share as starter. The quiche was cold and tasted like it was a couple of days old. we ordered the quiche of the day and French cold cut to share as starter. The quiche was cold and tasted like it was a couple of days old. The cold cut was fine but nothing spectacular,  the ham and sausages were ok with nice texture. 

We then had the kilo RibBone to share, again the meat was chewy and undercooked although we asked for medium well. This dish is good for sharing but if you are a beef expert, you would not like it as it is not a good quality of cut.

The red wine we had which was recommended by the waitress but we did not like as it tasted a bit sharp. 

題外話/補充資料: Overall, food was just average quality, and service not friendly as our waitress never smiled once. There are so many French restaurants in Hong Kong offer much better than this. i would not recommend it to anyone as it was simply waste of time.

Our dining started off with an appetiser of a mean told off by the receptionist at the bar as we were 15 minutes late, which I called to inform earlier. We were than allowed only a table for 2 until our friends arrived. Followed by a second course of constant mean staring and ear whispering among the staffs. Not until we ordered the courses for our two other friends were we allowed to have the vacant table next to us. Finally a request from the waitress asking us to keep ourselves to our table when the couple next to us actually wanted to chat with us. Meh, what a service.

Foie Gras Crème Brûlée
Nonetheless, we got our first courses here. The foie gras creme brûlée was nicely portioned with a shiny glaze of crispy caramelized layer. The inner was smooth with a nice touch of vanilla flavour in it.

I can't go to any French restaurant without a bowl of hot French onion soup. Les Fils a Maman's one was quite delightful but it would be better if there was more cheese. I love how concentrated the onion broth was.

Traditional Boeuf Bourguignon
This freaking delicious Beef burgundy's broth was flavour bursting! It was tangy, rich, aromatic with the presence of herbs and bacon bites. The beef cubes were tender and every bite of it squeezed out the broth that it captured during stewing. Yum!

Griottines Clafoutis
The Grottines Cladfoutis is a traditional French dessert. I usually dislike cherry but this cherry clafoutis was good. I originally expected a cake texture, but it was more like flan cake, which was moist, creamy and smooth.

Mango & Kiwi Mascarpone Verrine
The mascarpone was a light dessert. Although it was not as powerful as the Grottines Cladfoutis, I prefer this little cup more. The mango sauce and mango bites compliments the light cheese flavour nicely. However I did not taste any kiwi in the pot.

Earl Gray Tea
Tea was served at the end of the meal. We chose Earl Grey as there weren't many choices really as many were ran out already. To our most surprise, we were served a cup of hot water and an Earl Gray tea bag with a pack of sugar. Even I would serve my guest better than here.

An delightful surprise was served on our table when we asked for the bill, a jar of colourful sweets! This was an evil jar and we cannot stop ourselves gorging on it. I think we ended up consumed a quarter jar of sweets among us four! We crazy sweet eaters.

Despite the unwelcoming service we encountered, Les Fils a Maman is actually a pretty nice place to dine in. The restaurant furnishing was cool and homey, the ambiance was chill, the food was nice, the portion is generous and the price is very affordable. Not to mention the jar of sweet that was served a the end! I would recommend Les Fils a Maman to anyone who wants a casual place for good French Good. Just hope the restaurant could train/ improve the servers' attitude, nonetheless they are working in the service industry.

Seasonal pot: Beef Bourguinon with French fries, 紅酒燉牛肉, 待應話呢款菜於法國家庭好常見, 用左5 個小時間慢火烹調, 肉汁味好濃, 因為用紅酒肉汁味道帶有少少酸味, 令人食多左都唔會覺得太滯, 每件牛肉都好嫩而且吸收了好多汁, 唔好睇少呢個小紅煲呢, 食到尾真係好飽, 薯條好幼身, 爽脆, 食落帶有少少甜味, 佢地係用原個薯仔即場切絲即炸, 同外面好唔同, 薯條山份量真係多到食唔哂

Salad is large and vegs are very fresh, smoked salmon is not too salty, mozzorella is soft and buttery and the vinaigrette is just right. A very well balanced salad.

The quiche is made with puff pastry instead of shortcrust, makes it nice and fulffy together with very strong but not overpowering cheese filling (with distinctive Halloumi style cheese), is definatly my favourite dish of the evening.

The Bourguinon was a little disappointing though, the texture of the beef is great, but there is not much flavor other than cook red wine, it doesn't feel like a finished dish.
The ratatouille side was really nice, again, thanks to the well seasoned fresh vegs.

To top is off the pear cake was good, the soft cake is not mainstream in HK, but it goes very well with the subtle vanilla ice cream.
題外話/補充資料: Although the price is a little high, I would very much come back once in a while to relax and drink in the atmosphere. And of course, have a 5 Cheeses Quiche. :)

Boyfriend and I decided to try this place as I had bookmarked it on Openrice a long while back. It's a bit hidden which made it perfect for a cozy place to eat. We were greeted by a lovely French waitress who took us to a table and brought along a chalk board of tonight specials. While waiting for our food, we loved the sweet decor filled with wonderful French childhood classics like Tin Tin. I ordered the duck confit and I have to say...this is the best duck confit in Hong Kong! Other French restaurants use duck breast but in actuality, duck leg should be used and that's what this place served me. A hearty whole duck leg. It was tender, falling off the bone. The potatoes under the leg was flavored with the delicious duck fat. Ladies, if you expect to eat real French, than don't expect it to be light and healthy cos the French love cooking with duck fat and that's why I love the French! The salad was crisp and right amount of dressing to balance out the heaviness of the duck. And the tangy orange sauce for the duck was fantastic!

Boyfriend ordered the beef bourguinon. It came with a generous serving of crispy fries. The pot of beef was packed with beef so tender it melted in your mouth. You could taste the red wine used to stew the beef. It almost made you drunk.

Portion size was so huge, we were too full so didn't order dessert. The table next to us were also contemplating on dessert as they were too full as well and they were two huge sized men! On the menu was a rib set enough for two people but a table of four ordered it and when it came out, it was enough huge and enough for at least 4-5 people.

When we asked for the bill, the waitress gave us a jar of candy to munch on. And there was no rush to get us out. In true French fashion!

The atmosphere, the people, the food, the whole place...this is how a real French restaurant should be Hong Kong. It was exactly how I had French food in Paris. Will definitely come again.

The rice beneath it was piping hot and each grain was lubricated in chicken oil.
Everything just tasted lovely together and the rocket leaves went soft when it was mixed with hot food getting partly cooked and tasting less grassy.
The mushroom slices tasted earthy which complement the chicken nicely.

I walked by the restaurant before and saw someone had this full plateful of fries with a full casserole pot of meat, and that image just stuck to my mind, that I must try it!

I ordered a fish chowder as starter, it tasted a little (just a little) fishy, kind of like Chinese fish soup (in terms of the texture) but with served with two small croutons
   I added some pepper and it tastes better.  It's served with a small bucket of bread.  The bread tastes a bit tough, but of very good substance.

My main dish is Plat du jour - boeuf bourguignon and frites maison.  Wow! I mean, WOW! That plateful of golden brown fries!  The casserole pot of beef is so plentiful!  The pot looks small, but it contains so much beef that was very well cooked for 5 hours!  The meat is so tender with the suitable amount of fat, filled with very rich red wine sauce.  At the bottom of the pot there was some white button mushroom slides.  I almost got drunk enjoying this dish!

My friend ordered a fish dish
  Sorry I forgot the name, but it's also quite good. The fish is coated with a layer of cheesy crumbs, served with some mash potato, potato, and salad.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience. We were the first ones to arrive the restaurant and by the time we left, there was another table of 3 sitting by the window.  The restaurant tables are placed quite close to each other but when it's almost all to yourself, you can really really enjoy the interesting interior decor and the easy-going ambience. They have some nice music playing during the whole time.  I'll definitely go back again!

I've seen this place from afar a few times now, and finally got around to going.  I thought I wasn't going to be able to make it, last order is at 2 for lunch.  Fortunately, the nice man called me back and told me that it is at 2:30 on Saturdays (and apparently it is even later on Sundays), so by speedwalking from the MTR, I was able to make it.  And I will definitely be coming back again!

As a starter, we had the foie gras creme brulee, and I'll cut right to the chase, it was divine.  Not pure foie gras, but something half-way between a mousse and a pate, topped with perfectly caramelized, crunchy sugar.  The amount you get for the price is more than enough for 2 hungry people.  It comes with a little bucket of sliced bread (not quite enough bread). 

For the mains, we got the sole fillet with mussels and ratatouille, and the boeuf bourguignon.  The sole was alright, not that special unfortunately (and for a restaurant that has a rather limited choice on the menu, I'd expect it to be a bit better, frankly).  The ratatouille was quite nice (but the ratatouille is not meant to be the star of the dish), and the mussels weren't great. 

The boeuf bourguignon on the other hand, is at least as good as anything you'll find in France (and better than virtually all the tourist traps in Paris which serve a pitiful excuse for a bourguignon), and being French, I do know what I'm talking about here!  The red wine flavour is nice and rich, the beef is lovely and tender (they use a nice fatty cut which just melts in the mouth, not the tough chewy kind), and there is a lot of it!  They don't try and shortchange you on the meat, that's for sure.  It came served in a small casserole pot, which was full to the brim with the beef itself, not just 3-5 tiny pieces swimming in sauce as you sometimes find.  The home-made fries were very tasty too, and the presentation was rather cute, with everything being served on a wooden board instead of a plate.

Finally, the service was great, very friendly staff who are more than willing to have a chat with customers, lovely atmosphere and decor.  Can't wait until I go back again (I want to try that camembert with apple)!

We paid $330 for 2 persons, and felt as though we had eaten enough for twice that number.  In terms of price/quality and overall satisfaction, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

This beef was amazing, it was soft with a strong beef taste paired with lovely thinly sliced mushrooms with a earthy taste.
The gravy was rich with lots of wine in it, after I finished the beef, I put all the fries in the pot and the gravy and fries just went perfectly together.

The fish was soft and tender drenched in the lovely buttery sauce which had a strong alcoholic taste.
The potatoes were really nice, they were firm without being too hard and they were really silky in the middle.

After spending HKD 800 on a steak for two, we wanted to take the leftovers home. This is where a pleasant evening turned sour. They said they don't normally let people take the leftovers home. Really?! They relented, but said we would have to pay HKD 15 for the container. I've never had that happen before, a bit annoying, especially for a very cheap piece of plastic, but not a big deal. I've never experienced a restaurant telling a customer that they couldn't take home leftovers from meal (except for a buffet, which this was not). A sad way to end what was a celebratory meal.

在某個星期五的下午, 同太座BOOK了中環區的LES FILS A MAMAN 雖然我們早到了中環但找它實在用上了時間, 因為它被收藏於後巷內, 不過當你走進後巷之後再發現它, 你會發覺置身內庭形式的政府花園, 而她就是這內庭旁邊幾間”特色吧”的其中之一, 由於天氣已經轉涼, 店內沒有開冷氣只是打開大玻璃門, 跟戶外空氣作對流, 對於本來就不太接受冷氣的我們來說完全不成問題, 店內客人八成是洋人(白色那種) 大家都態度非常之輕鬆, 座位是完全夠空間的, 可能因為是”午餐時間” 我估計當晚幕低垂氣氛轉為”酒吧”之後, 情況會截然不同, 由於之前已經在嘉咸街走上走落體溫有點上升, 不過走入店內隨即送上一瓶水(free of charge)實在感覺到就像回家似的, 說實在吃西餐的餐館很少會提供免費水的,尤其現今餐廳的不明文規則, 唔問都無水, 即使問都未未必會有水! 其實店方對客人的關懷能發自內心客人亦必會開懷柯打, 這店內裝飾採取大部份以家為題材的擺設, 中間以一張吧枱令人明白她亦是一間”吧” 特別喜歡她們用紅色紙巾,那個小小的水杯, 不知怎解一看到這配搭就感覺非常之”法國”風情”吃什麼?

食物方面:
前菜- 三文魚配蕃茄粒意大利節瓜粒粒小米, 撈米的汁只會感覺到微酸而不會見到汁, 同清淡的蕃茄粒意大利節瓜粒粒完美結合, 欣賞她還會灑上一點乾香草/ 紅椒粉作適量的裝飾, 而亦有留意到碟邊是有印上店名的,
是日餐湯- 說是蒜湯但其實會感覺很像雞湯, 蒜味基本上無影無踪, 不過這可以理解, 因為之前自己在家裡亦試過做這湯, 即使放大量蒜片, 到頭來蒜味並不怎麼強烈,
配餐的飽雖然沒有re-hit 但本身那飽就是充滿麥香, 雖然咬起來要出點力度不過這種飽就能食出最原本的麥味,
主菜: Chef Pot 是一煲茄汁煮豬肩肉, 肉質較結實亦有豬肉香, 配菜有Olive, 這裡用的Olive味道柔和正合自己口味,最底是四粒新薯, 吃到尾是很飽的, 別看少它的小紅煲呢!
另一個主菜是Duck Burger當拿出來時好不嚇人, 因為除了漢堡扒特厚之外, 旁邊那一大堆粗幼不一的薯條山, 霸佔了整個木板的六成, 飽是很有質感那種, 而漢堡扒肉有鴨肉騷味, 薯條則只是粗幼口感不一, 十分隨個人喜好, 但我們還是將所有薯條掃個清光! 雖然好了好長時間,
我們吃了一頓頗長的時間, 因為份量真的很豐富,而埋單時那法國大姐問我們覺得是否OK?我答道:V empty all dish what do u thing about it?她笑得很滿意, 證明自己推薦的菜式得到客人欣賞, 是金錢以外的一種快樂!
她們做到的是我們中國人說的”賓至如歸”

We had one of the most relaxing brunch here at Les Fils a Maman. The decor is both warm and original. It was not a busy restaurant in Saturday afternoon, wth only one more table besides us. We ordered a quiche of tomato which tasted delicous as starter.For entree, we had a salmon fillet in grapefruit and cream sauce and a pot of duck legwith apple sauce. with apple sauce. The fish is slightly overcooked for me, if I'm being very picky. But overall, it is a wonderfully done french dish. For the duck leg it was just done right, with a heavenly summer sauce of apple. The meat was tender and succulent, while the acidity in apply sauce greatly complement the richness in the duck leg.

The dessert was not disappointing too, a tarte with sour cherry sauce and cream fraiche. Oh how i miss having sour cream for my dessert. The sour cream really balanced the sweetness well. 

Of course we finished off with two cups of proper cafe.

In a word, worth coming back.

這個法式小酒館并不好找,穿過狹窄的小巷,路過幾間差不多模式的酒館才找到這間“黑壓壓”又“紅彤彤”的餐廳,入口挺小剛好一人入內,但其實大面積的玻璃窗早已將店內的溫暖空間透出來;就餐與Bar的空間剛好被橢圓形的調酒區隔開,最討人喜愛的是那些掛在牆上的飾物,相框、畫框、黑板、茶壺茶杯還有幾本厚厚的烹飪書,看似淩亂實則為單一的四道墻添上色彩與立體感。

餐廳中忙來忙去的有三位大男孩,猜想是媽媽的三個好兒子吧?三個人倒是分工明確,一個主張調酒區,另兩個則負責招待就餐區的食客。整個就餐環境偏暗紅色,無形中給人一種慵懶與溫暖的感覺,加之燭光搖曳,溫馨小酒館的感覺倍增,很適合一班老友來把酒暢談。

Burgundy style garlic and herbs snail quiche香噴噴的端上桌,模樣不敢恭維,實在很家庭;超大一個quiche周身被層層疊疊的酥脆酥皮蓋住,餐盤周圍則圍住一圈點上不少黑醋的生菜葉,稍稍湊近,牛油與雞蛋的香味隨著陣陣的暖氣直撲過來;切開更是熱氣直冒,靠裡層的酥皮吸收了熱氣與水氣變得軟軟韌韌,口感略帶彈性,底下則吃到一層厚厚的燉蛋底,鮮咸味濃配上點點蒜香。

水煮蛋配煙三文魚沙律,嫩嫩的水煮蛋蛋黃剛好凝結,切開並不會流黃,蛋香濃郁的蛋黃口感綿軟濕潤又有些小彈性,一點不熟流心蛋;切脆的沙律菜配上小番茄,新鮮爽脆在配上以紅酒調製的特色醬汁,清新開胃。

白酒燉雞煲以雞錘、白酒、蘑菇、香蒜與土豆燜煮而成,作為一道主菜烹調的時間不短,不過慢工出細活,雞錘燜的入味十分;整個雞煲收汁剛剛好,連著些雞皮的雞錘不會滑膩膩,只可惜似乎有些over cook 雞肉鞋口;相比較,我更喜歡雞煲內的燉土豆多一些,土豆燜煮的酥軟卻依然保持住完整的形態,口感更不用說,吸收了滿滿的湯汁,雞汁配上香草與香蒜的,最簡單不過的組合總是能給人帶來驚喜。

黑加侖子白朱古力雙層慕斯,作為不可少的甜品,既有賣相也有內涵。以白朱古力碎點綴的慕斯杯,大大杯絕對夠兩人分享;上層慕斯由黑加侖子與白朱古力混合製成,香甜中以新鮮黑加侖子的口味更為突出些,第一口會讓人覺得酸的緊要,接著便愛上那種好似食緊鮮果的酸味;下層的純白朱古力慕斯則甜得很多,口感比較輕盈鬆散,但質地細緻均勻,于口中緩緩化開,白朱古力的香甜更是止不住挑戰味蕾對於“甜”的承受度!

是夜的特色餐牌配埋兩款酒,略帶果酸味的香檳配埋前菜,去到主菜時便有入口溫潤同樣有些果漿口味的紅酒相襯,但其實我更喜歡等朋友時從酒牌上單點的Rose Blanc,口味近似香檳,以玫瑰最為主調,最適合女生,當然也適合點亮精彩一夜!

天下無不散之筵席,即使是那晚也不例外,不過最後的最後有靚仔老闆送上一大罐彩虹色的橡皮果汁軟糖,這樣的結尾也滿足!

Emplacement superbe:

This place wasn't easy to find at all. The address on Hollywood is technically correct but it's not on the main road. You'll need to walk down a flight of stairs in an alley before you see it, just like a small restaurant in Europe.

Wasn't sure whether it was the socially acceptable thing to do in a French restaurant but I ordered a beer anyway (draught Stella). Sticking to the maxim - beer than wine, you'll feel fine. (I heard it's the oppose in France though! )

The menu was designed like a notebook for children. At the back of the menu, you see the dreaded multiplication table! (Merde!)

The first page of the menu was an explanation of the origin of this place in French. The second page was in English. To cut a long story short, it's four French guy friends interested in cooking and starting a restaurant. Instead of boring "fine dining" stuff, they used menus from the mothers and grand-mothers. The rest is history and a few Les Fils à Maman in France and one in Hong Kong.

The menu wasn't very helpful I have to say as it's just "Soup of the day", "Stew of the day", "Fish of the day", "Boy's salad" and two desserts with prices. Not as informative as I had hoped.

After a while, the friendly French waiter (I believe the boss) brought us the daily blackboard. This was more informative than the menu but definitely required explanation even if you know French. They've prepared a menu filled with dishes from Burgundy.

Similar to what I had in many Germanic countries like Austria and Luxembourg (& in England). Essentially chopped pieces of ham and a lot of parsley in a jelly. I prefer a more saline taste but those here had more vinegar and, obviously, parsley. Still, not bad as a starter.

Those who like runny egg should like it. I tried a little bit of the egg. The egg taste wasn't as pronounced

My wife had coq du vin. Madame M. and I had duck breasts.
Monsieur P had quiche with snails.

Looked fairly small for a main course but seemed to be pretty compact.

The pacing of the food was good. Not too rushed and not too slow.



Coq du vin:

Chicken stewed in a white wine sauce.

I think they used a whole chicken and a fair amount of potatoes in the stew. I found the whole stew rather bland but perhaps it's because I had duck and red wine beforehand. The chicken pieces were tender. I thought this was rather average but my wife liked it.

The duck breasts were not as tender as I had hoped. But perhaps it's supposed to be more firm than otherwise. The skin was grilled, bringing out the gamey taste and gave it a fairly crunchy texture.

According to Monsieur P, most sauces in Burgundy had wine in it. Indeed, the sauce of the duck had a very aromatic red wine aftertaste. I enjoyed the fennel, walnuts and fresh mushrooms that came with it. I liked the fennel in particular. The texture was firm. The taste was great as it absorbed some of the duck oil and the sauce.

SInce my wife and I were guests, I was being extremely restrained with the alcohol and dutifully stuck with my Stella throughout the meal. But when we starting talked about Burgundy, red wine, how different tastes in red wine (e.g. flowers, leather, forest, soil evokes different memories in French people....etc.), plus half a plate of duck in front of me, I couldn't help but ordered a glass of red.

Living in urban Hong Kong for most of my life, the smell of forests and soil is not really part of my memory. Nevertheless, I still find the red excellent. Slightly on the dry side with a really complex taste which included a variety of berries and a hint of vanilla aftertaste.

This glass of red really matched with my duck. I was extremely eager to have another red but etiquette took precedence.

Pour conclure:

An interesting topic we talked about over dinner was the relationship between atmosphere, food presentation and taste.

Japanese focus a lot on food presentation. Minimalist interior design are used so that diners could pay full attention to the food and the way the food was presented to them. Price is not a main issue as long as the quality is good. More forgiving when it comes to meat but very strict when it comes to seafood. [50% Taste + 30% Food presentation + 20% Atmosphere?]

French focus a lot on atmosphere. According to Madame M and Monsieur P, having great food inside an office (i.e. with no atmosphere) is not as good as having decent food with good atmosphere. There has to be a link between the food and the atmosphere of the place you're having it. [40% Taste + 60% Atmosphere?]

My view is that for most Chinese people, including myself, the main focus is on taste and value. I prefer having great food at a shabby, messy and noisy location (e.g. food stalls, marketplace, dai pai dongs), than average food with great presentation or great atmosphere any time. Good atmosphere is a bonus, but if I have to pay a large premium for that, forget it. [70% Taste +15% Value + 15% Cleanliness/Service ?]

Having said that, the French, Japanese and Chinese at the table all enjoyed dining at Les Fils à Maman. Great atmosphere, casual, warm, food was decent and the price was reasonable.

I prefer this place more than Robuchon at Macau, which despite their 3 star reputation, served just average food. I prefer this place certainly much more than other overpriced "fusion"/"French" restaurant in Hong Kong.

Service was good. The French boss and the French waitress (before you get any ideas, I believe she's the boss's girl-friend or wife
) were incredibly friendly and patient. Feel free to ask for recommendations.
