Since this restaurant is situated rather close to our home, so we decided to drive there tonight for a simple dinner after work. We first noticed Trattoria Caffe Monteverdi as we drove past High Street recently, noticing it was quite full during the weekends, and on top of very good reviews from various sources, we decided to try it out.The service was mainly 'entertained' (pretentiously hard sell with inflated and attractive descriptions of food and wine items which later disappoint) by a Chine

Since this restaurant is situated rather close to our home, so we decided to drive there tonight for a simple dinner after work. We first noticed Trattoria Caffe Monteverdi as we drove past High Street recently, noticing it was quite full during the weekends, and on top of very good reviews from various sources, we decided to try it out.

The service was mainly 'entertained' (pretentiously hard sell with inflated and attractive descriptions of food and wine items which later disappoint) by a Chinese lady and her Western husband, whom I guess are the owners. There is one other elderly waiter who used to work at Gingko House, and an Indian chef.

We ordered 2 glasses of house pinot grigio, sarde ripiene, homemade tagliatelli with sea bass, barolo risotto and braised rabbit with sweet & sour sauce . . . ALL WERE OVERCOOKED, BLAND AND TASTELESS


We dare not stay for dessert or coffee . . .

但喝一口, 我們相視而笑, 馬上連喝多幾口, 還笑說日後有機會要回家試做這款湯啊~ 相當美味, 還熱呼呼的 !
配著不同款式的面包, 這個前菜真是來得不錯 ~

餐 A 是 煎豬排, 肉質普通, 有點"un", 比較遜色一點~
餐 B 是 house pasta, 看樣子不甚了了, 味道卻不錯, 粉的口感不會太"淋", 有一些咬感, 而且跟菇, 茄汁, 香草同吃, 清得來卻吃到粉及醬汁的味道~ 這不是容易處理的菜式啊, 越簡單越見其難度!

甜品是杏仁蛋糕, 沒甚特別 !

咖啡則是亮點, 是杯比較難手握, 味道很有當天意遊風味, 算是重拾一下吧 ~

餐廳裡面同出面街嘅環境完全相反,餐廳俾人一種舒服感覺,食完都唔係好想走...食物質素同味道都好好,同我之前去食嘅意大利嘢完全唔同,好有自己嘅風格,都幾特別同埋好有心機。食物份量啱啱好,冇多冇少,唔會浪費又唔會唔夠食。老闆娘同伙計都超nice,會細心介紹食物同話俾我地聽應該點食。值得再去。

Monteverdi Primitivo from Puglia – $68
It wasn’t my 1st preferred Wine but since the owner hinted they already have this bottle opened by the glass, I decided to check out the Italian Zinfandel once again… Quite minty but good.

Gnudi dumplings. Spinach and Ricotta Balls in Sage Butter sauce with Tuscan Style – $118
Our favourite dish on the night, this was quite packed with cheese flavours and felt like it was almost meaty. The sage butter was a little thin in consistency. Like the Gnudi balls overall ~ 8/10

Vincisgrassi from Marche region – $128
An alternative to Lasagne from nearby Romagna, this Marche version is even more gamier strong, possibly infused with chicken organs. And there was a slight hint of nutmeg which always accentuates the meatiness. The baked pasta was spot on cooked, the minced meat and organs sophisticated despite no white bechamel sauce. A signature dish here.. ~ 8/10

Sicilian Cassata – $88
This Cassata version is interlaced with a Sponge cake, Vanilla Gelato, Chopped Almonds, Pistachio Gelato & Sugarized Orange bits & Zest. There are many types of Cassatas, but usually I either encounter the ice cream version or the decorative cake Cassatas stuffed with candied fruits and of Arabian descent. The wedge for $88 served here was kinda small but half-way between a cake and ice-cream version it was decent. ~ 7/10

Stuffed Sardines,Sarde Ripiene,Liguria,里古利亞釀沙甸魚,$52,薄薄的沙甸魚釀入了數款煙肉、腸肉及香草,再蘸上蛋漿及麵包糠後炸至外表金黃色,入口香脆,濃郁的沙甸魚味中帶著鹹香,味道恰好,沒有過鹹,香口好吃。

Layered Oven Baked Pasta,Vincisgrassi,Marche,自家制香濃肉茉千層麵,$138。以店主在意大利中部Marche出生及居住,這個Vincisgrassi是他的家鄉菜,層層麵皮夾著大量肉碎餡料,聞下去已經充滿肉香,吃著肉味極為濃郁,很少吃到這種濃濃的肉味。

Homemade Spinach and Ricotta Balls in Butter and Sage Sauce,Gnudi,Tuscany,自家制菠菜芝士球,$118,以大量芝士混入菠菜搓成小圓球,吃下口感竟然有點像肉球,濃郁的芝士奶香,吃多數口也不感溜膩。伴著鼠尾草牛油醬汁,味道不太濃,但整體很喜愛吃這菜式。

最後甜品選了一款來吃Cassata,Sicily,$88,由海綿蛋糕、雲尼拿雪糕、杏仁碎、開心果雪糕、糖漬橙肉、雲尼拿雪糕及海綿蛋糕組成。層次豐富,但味道不算十分特別,不會很甜。

Few weeks ago I walked by this restaurant on High Street and was attracted by its European country deco so decided to try the food there with my friends.

Luckily I made reservation as it was full house that Thursday; having said that, the restaurant is of small size which can accommodate only about 20 people. It's cozy though, feeling like enjoying food at home.

A gentleman there nicely led us to a table and gave us a name card, his title is "The Host" of the restaurant, so I suppose he is the owner and apparently he is an Italian. (So I expected the food to be truly authentic
)

The Host gave us a brief introduction of the menu and recommended a good wine Primitivo (of coz it's Italian wine
) Four of us finished 2 bottles. I am not wine expert but we did not feel drunk and finished the last sip!!

Each of us then ordered 4 courses including dessert (the portion was just good although my friends kept saying very full and I insisted to finish the meal with a dessert and let me share more about their dessert later!)

I started with an appetizer called Caponatina – recommended by the Host as it’s light to go with my 2nd main course Lamb. Caponatina is a very appetizing and refreshing vege dishes so it’s a good start with my meal!

Then my first main course was “Vincisgrassi” (not sure if I spell it right) recommended by the Host as well. I must tell you, this was soooooo delicious and it was something like Lasagna BUT indeed it was not because it was so much delicious than the cheesy one that we usually have out there!! The meat that they put in the layer was braised for 3 hours so it was so tender and yummy!!! In fact I don’t have a word to describe how delicious it was!!!!

My 2nd main course was Lamb, which also tasted good, but it would be better if it could be a bit more tender and juicy. Perhaps I was a bit full already =p Yet I was still so tempted to try their dessert due to their recommendation and its English name called “English Soup” (A very complicated Italian name called something like Zuppa xxxx) I was told this was one of the dish for the Queen long time ago!

It was superb!!! I can tell you Tiramisu is just NOTHING!! Again, no word can describe - soft, light, refreshing, memorable and everything!! The dinner ended with such an impeccable dessert, amazing!!
I highly recommend this small Italian caffe. I started to realize what Italian food are and where they truly come from. It’s not about traditional pizza nor pasta anymore!!
