Dinner with my girlfriend for our monthlyversary. Walking along Elgin and Stauton and thinking where to go. We walked pass Craft Steak and l was impressed by the open kitchen with the huge grill.

The journey starts...

Santa Christina (Red Wine): Not a big fans of wine but Santa Christina is easy to drink, smooth and I like it.
(8/10)
Onion Soup: I am a huge fans of onion soup, the onion soup @ Craft Steak is surely one of the best in town. Must try. (Sunning's onion soup is also one of my favorites).
(9.5/10)
Tuna Tartar: Comparing to the sirloin and onion soup, the tuna tartar was only fair. (6.5/10)
Sirloin (14oz, Medium-rare) : Bravo!! Juicy, tender and I can taste the beef's favor. I like the way they grill the steak. (They use coal)
(9/10)
Mashed Potatoes (Side Dish): I didn't try this because I was alread full. According to my gf, she said not bad..

Mac & Cheese Gratin (Side Dish): Instead of mixing the mac & cheese together, the chef gives an extra touch - putting the cheese on top of the macaroni and baked it together. The favour is less heavy and a good match with the sirloin.
(8/10)

Total HKD958 for two persons. Given the quality of the food, the atmostphere as well as the service, I think it is very reasonable. I hope the Chef @ Craft Steak can keep up the "quality" and "taste" of the food.

Things to improve:
- Table: too small
- Service: not attentive enough...

Definitely will come again...

Nicely cooked/ grilled as requested: midium-rare.
However, the meat itself is too light in meat favour,
no matter how much effort the cook seasoned it ...
Feel a bit disappointing ...

Super Monday again! I love Mondays as I could always enjoy more food with less price. Today, we brought my parents along with us to Craft Steak in Soho, which my boyfriend reckoned it is a very decent restaurant.
There are two dinning sessions in Craft Steak, one from 6.30 - 8.15, another from 8.45 - closed. So we made our reservation at 8.45. When we arrived to the restaurant, the waiter said they do not have any reservation record from us. At that moment, all empty table had already had a reserve card on them, we were afraid that we might have to disappoint my parents especially we had the dinner that late at night. Fortunately, after waited for about ten minutes, the waiter somehow got us a table to settle in.
Since my parents were joining for dinner, we ordered a bottle of Oyster Bay. The Oyster Bay was nice. It was quite fruity and was very easy to drink.
1) French Onion Soup $68
I also ordered French Onion Soup as starters. Ever since I had my first onion soup in Pickles Pedican, I had fallen in love with it. I still find Pickles Pedican offers the best French Onion Soup in HK. The outlook of Craftsteak's onion soup did not excite me like Pickles Pedican's did. The cheese were baked inside the bowl and melted on the crouton. The cheese were thick in texture and had a strong cheese flavour. It was totally melted and it was fun pulling strings of cheese off the crouton. The crouton was extremely hard that I could barely bite a piece off. My boyfriend asked me to soak the crouton for a while, and it did turn softer after some time. The crouton was very soft with a texture similar to sponge, sadly it didn't have the crispy texture like Pedican's did. Yet the crouton was as delicious as the essence of the onion soup had totally fermeated into the crouton. The onion soup was nicely caramelised to give an exceptional sweet and rich onion taste. Quite nice.
Right after my onion soup, a plate of bread was served. It came in such a bad timing, but we had it anyway. The bread was muffin-like which was quite cute. It was just freshly baked out of the oven, very hot and soft. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The butter was a spreadable one and melted onto the bread once it was spreaded on the bread. I didn't had the whole bread, 'coz it would be pretty full if I did.
2) Wagyu Top Round $208 /11oz
There were in total 9 sauces to choose from for any steaks, chops and birds you ordered. I chosed Creamed Horseradish for my wagyu. The waitress said Creamed Horeseradish was kind of like a dilute form of wasabi in white. The sauce was slightly spicy and had a mild wasabi taste but would not bring the irritaion as the green wasabi paste would. The sauce was actually nice to go with the Wagyu.
I had my Wagyu cooked until medium rare. In Craftsteak, the chief uses open fire to cooks. You could literally watch them grilling your steaks from the open kitchen. When finished, the Wagyu was served in a large iron plate with a cute bamboo stick writing 'medium rare' on it. The Wagyu was extremely juicy and was grilled nicely to have the slight burned esge but still keeping the inside as medium rare. The texture of the Wagyu, if judging from the steak itself without comparison, I would think it was pretty nice and tenderl.Yet, if it were compared with the Ribeye and T-bone, it was significantly less tender and soft. If I were granted a choice again, I might chose to go for the other two options rather than the Wagyu Top Round that I had.
2) Salmon & Rib Eyes & T-Bone | Family's Dishes
As the above dishes were my family's dishes, so I would only give several short and brief comments on the dishes' details as I had not tasted them fully.
Salmon fillet $158/ 9oz
Mum's dish. Three sauces to choose from, and we chose the relatively lighter and healthier sauce, Olive Oil and Lemon. Very nicely served on the plain white dish with a grilled lemon. The grilled lemon although grilled, but still juicy and was able to be squeezed to give fresh lemon juice. However, the lemon turned rather hard after grilled and more force was needed for the squeezed.
Salmon looked fresh and nice. There were layters of fatty layed across the fish, with reasonable thickness. The fish was still pretty raw and did not give the crispy edge that I expected to have for grilled salmon. My mum didn't like it that much either.
Ribeye $228/ 12oz
My boyfriend's dish, cooked until medium and sided with Béarnaise sauce. Béarnaise sauce is a sauce made of clarified butter emulsified in egg yolks and flavored with herbs. The sauce was sweet and tasty. The ribeye was also very juicy. Its texture was very soft and tender, better than my Wagyu.
T-bone $258/ 16oz
Dad's dish, cooked until medium rare and sided with Bourbon Peppercorn. The sauce was spicer than my Creamed Horseradish. It was less juicy than the Wagyu and Ribeye but was most soft and tender! The portion was extremely huge, a 16oz T-bone. My dad tried his best to finish it but still had 8oz left for take away.
3) Side Dishes | Each @ $38
For some reason, I thought these side dishes had to be ordered with the main course. But came to think about it, the restaurant charged you for these sides, and both of their main course and side dishes' portion were huge, so unless necessary, try not to order one side for each main course.
Grilled Baby Asparagus with Sea Salt
Asparagus is my all time fabourite as I have mentioned it many times in my reviews. Craftsteak's Asparagus was fresh. It was cooked until al dente and gave a good firm texture. The salty taste went naturally good with the asparagus, but the saltiness was just mild.
Parmesan Creamed Spinach
This spinach side came and nearly gave me a heart attack. The dish was overly creamy and made the texture of the spinach meshy and soft like baby food. The Parmesan taste were too light that it could not be tasted. The taste were mostly dominated by cream, and cream had not much taste at all.
Macaroni and Cheese Gratin
When I forked into the Macaroni and Cheese Gratin and pulled one macaroni out, the melted cheese followed my direction and pulled at least 15cm before it broke off!! Magnificent scene, I put the marcaroni into my mouth and OMG, it was absolutely scrumptious. It was cheesy and rich. The texture was nice that the cheese were baked to give a slight chewy mouth feel. Thumb up for this little side dish! Should have ordered two instead!
Steamed Broccoli with Brown Butter
This broccoli was fresh but had no flavour at all. Totally regretted ordering it. We were justing trying to make ourselves feeling better 'coz we were having too much meat.

Overall, Craftsteak was a very decent place with nice environment and delicious food. The service was excellent in general despite they had kind of lost our reservation. I would recommend the french onion soup as appetizer, T-bone steak with Creamed Horseradish sauce as main course and Macaroni and Cheese Gratin as side dish.

For a place called CraftSTEAK their steak is probably the worst part of the whole meal!

Let's start with the good things first....

The bread was a bit hard, but decent

The side dish of garlic mushrooms was quite good!

But then....

1) This place is way too crowded and loud for a restaurant of this (attempted) calibre

2) The steak...my my....how can I describe it? Burnt on the outside, raw on the inside, tough, flavourless....I really think I could have had better at Steak Expert or any old cha chaan teng!

I had ordered a Wagyu Flat Iron and I cannot imagine anything that can depart further from what I know Wagyu ought to be. Now, for 250, you don't expect to have melt in your mouth meat, but I did not expect to have a BIG FAT TENDON stuck in the middle of my steak, and various little ones crawling all over the rest of it. About 1/3 of my steak was inedible because I couldn't even saw through it with their steak knife. Besides that, there was no marbling whatsoever. The crust was basically black charcoal.

My boyfriend had a fillet, but fared little better. His was raw in some places, cooked in others, full of spice and flavour (too salty!!) in places, and bland in others. The meat quality seemed ok, but it was totally wasted from their burn the outside and leave the inside raw cooking methods.

As for the sauce, the portions were somewhat small, although the mushroom sauce was quite nice and fragrant. My herb and garlic butter however tasted far too much of parsley.

All in all, this dinner really deserved a D+ at most.

I have been to this restaurant quite a few times as I used to be addicted to their French Onion Soup (one of the most delicious ones I've tasted). I cannot believe that this restaurant would get so many negative comments as I have always loved this restaurant. However, I have only come during lunchtime and never for dinner. From what I can tell, the lunch is more expensive than other sets in Soho, but it is also much nicer in both presentation, taste and atmosphere.

The restaurant is decorated very nicely with barn doors and mirrors to make it appear more spacious. It is very clean and hygienic and has a high-class look. The service is polite, nice and quite fast (at that time, there were only three tables with customers).

Warm Mushroom and Spinach Salad
This dish was quite delicious, although it is hard to get it wrong. The spinach is fresh and plentiful, while the mushrooms tasted great, very juicy. There are also some slices of roasted peppers that worked very well with the rest of the dish. There was also a sauce, which although I cannot remember what it was, I can remember it had a slightly tangy taste to it.

Craftsteak Burger
A very large burger! Be sure you are hungry when you order this dish (I was!). The bun was nicely toasted on the grill (as seen by the char marks). The actual beef itself was very juicy and a considerable amount, so I think it is worth the money. The bacon added a smokey flavor while the Swiss cheese mellowed the dish out. The only problem was that there was no way to eat the burger in one bite like that, so I had to split it in half to fit it in my mouth. However, I must say, this burger was very delicious and worth the calories.

Pecan Pie with Maple Ice Cream
The pecan pie is served cold, which I didn't like as much. I prefer warm desserts, but I have never eaten pecan pie before and am unsure whether it should be served warm or cold. Nevertheless, it tasted very nice; the pecans were crunchy and sweet while the bottom layer was smooth, creamy and buttery. I did not really enjoy the crust as it was too 'buttery' and left a too-rich feeling in my mouth. The maple ice cream was delicious, although I would have preferred a stronger maple flavor.

Overall, I believe Craftsteak is one of Soho's most excellent restaurants and, despite the bad claims, one must give it a try. As most people seem to have problems during dinnertime, I would suggest coming for lunch if possible.

Walked into the restaurant tonight as Jaspas was fully booked. Thinking I could have a decent piece of steak. Perhaps I was not well dressed enough, or perhaps, the waiters are just too busy.
The restaurant was quite full and I believe the waiters were quite busy. When I signaled the waitress to place the order, out of the blue, a manager looking gentleman came to take our order.
We asked if the Wagyu round or the Wagyu Flat Iron would be more tender, then he told us "Wagyu is very tender because it's got a lot of fat in it". Then I said ok, then the Flat iron would be more tender, he said sure. So I ordered the Wagyu Round as we'd like something with more texture. We ordered Medium Rare. Then the gentlemen left without asking what kind of sause we'd like. Then I thought, maybe they will come in a tray like Intercontinental steak house would.
We ordered
grilled ceasar salad
ribeye steak 12 oz
wagyu round 10 oz
mash potatoes
Thinking that the steak is already quite large, my boyfriend and I split our salad. Though the presentation looks a bit.. weird, but it actually tasted very good with the candied bacon.
Finally the steak came, it has a medium well stick in it and it's got the steaksauce with it. The steak, especially the So called Wagyu round, looked more like the bark of a tree than a usually piece of fatty wagyu should look like. and it tasted like it was CARDBOARD (well done) with serious crusts over 1/3 of the steak. I didn't want to get a replacement coz I didn't want them to waste the steak / or it might turn out to be worse. I was so completely dissapointed and thought I should have gone to citysuper to get a better cut and cook it myself! I'm sure it will be a bit juicier.
After we were done, I asked the manager if we actually get to choose the kind of sauce, and he told me yes, then I said how come the gentlement didn't let me know? also I ordered medium rare and it turned out to be cardboard looking. His answer was not very amusing. he told me the person who took my order was a manager of the same group but a different restaurant. and that he is the actual manager of craftsteak and he apologizes for the inconvenience....
Haha!! So.. Managers can actually run around taking orders for customers from different restaurants, not knowing what's in the menu and so on.
I am absolutely dissapointed and will not go to CRAFTSTEAK ever again!

service is alright. the waiters are friendly. you need to book in advance as it is a really small restaurant and not many tables.

price is little pricey and didn't justify the quality of the steaks when it came. i've had better elsewhere.

The experience started out well, the staff were attentive without being pushy. The experience started out well, the staff were attentive without being pushy. We had a reservation for 7.30 and the place was empty when we arrived.

The starters (Caesar Salad, Spinach/Blue Cheese salad, Chorizo) were well presented and very nice indeed.

The steaks were an absolute disappointment.
The Black Angus Sirloin (@$345) was ordered blue, but came out medium-rare, and was ruined by overseasoning and tainted by the acrid taste of a dirty grill.
The Wagu Flat Iron (@208) was ordered medium-rare, but came medium-well. No excess seasoning, but again that dirty grill taste.
We both know our meat, and despite complaining, no offer was made to change the steak, we were told that the grill was cleaned that morning

After scraping all of the excess black pepper off the sirloin, I could finally taste some meat over the acrid dirty grill flavour.

The sides were mediocre at best, and the rosti came out over 10 minutes after the steaks - after 5 minutes we enquired, and requested that they cancel the order as we did not want rosti for dessert, but the dish still came (cold in middle) anyway.

The 'chef' was overheard through out the meal complaining loudly to the service staff about his hours.

The 'manager' gave an insincere apology, and the bill came unchanged.

There are plenty of decent restaurants in SoHo, don't waste your time and money going to Craft Steak.
Cooking a steak is the most basic culinary skill, like boiling an egg. It is a shame to have a disgruntled buffoon on the grill destroying what probably started being a nice piece of meat, and taking the shine off an otherwise fine evening.

Don't go there. Tell your friends!!

Despite the negative comment below, I think Craft Steak does offer good steak at a reasonable price. I was invited to a dinner there on Sunday and there are 7 of us. The restaurant is a bit small and so as the table, the environment is ok, quiet enough, but casual. I guess this is the usual type of restaurant at SOHO. The bread is baked properly and is warm when it is served. I am not a big fan of bread so I am not going to comment too much.
Let's cut it short, I had an ARGENTINA GRILLED CHORIZO to start with, it has two large whole sausage lying on the plate with a Saukernaut mixed Arugula Salad, and a small cup of herb sauce. Four out of the seven of us picked this dish as the starter. The CHORIZO is tasty but nothing really surprise, since it is something that cannot go wrong unless it is not properly cooked. I personally thinks it is a bit too heavy, however if you do like strong taste dishes and don't mind the fat and a little spicy, I would strongly recommend this dish.
I ordered a nU.S Prime Sirloin (11oz), I had medium rare, that is normally what I have for Sirloin, and for Prime Rib and Rib-EYE, I normally have Medium. You can choose a sauce on the side, there are quite a few ones, but I am sorry fellow diners, I cannot remember them at all. I picked mushroom sauce.
Here it comes the steak, it is served on a hot pan, however, it was less burning hot than I thought. The steak was cooked finely, crispy on the surface and warm inside, quite juicy and does have the usual chewy of a Sirloin, has a little cup of mushroom sauce on the side. A friend of mine ordered a Bone in Rib Eye (25oz), it was huge. I might try that next time.
I am personally a big fan of steak and I think the steak that I have here is definitely medium-high standard. To compare with BLT steak (Which I think they are quite similiar in terms of price and quality), I think the one I have in Craft is slightly better, may be due to the reason that when I visited BLT, it was just opened. We also ordered a couple other side dishes to share, Sauteed mushroom with garlic, Macaroni & Cheese, Fries. They are all pretty good, especially the sauteed mushroom.
I think 11oz Sirloin is a relatively small steak and to be very frank, it is much easier for a chef to handle and cook accordingly than a 16oz Sirloin, I guess that set a difference between a good steak house and an excellent steak house. But anyways, for what we have and what Craftsteak offered, I think it's already justified as a satisfying steakhouse.
Regarding the service standard, I think it is not as bad as what other diners commented below, however, I don't ignore the possibility that what I experienced was an exception.
I will definitely come back again with my family because especially my father, he really loves U.S Steak.

I hadn't been back to Craftsteak since they first opened (and served me a pork chop still frozen in the center), but a group of friends were going, so I thought I'd give it another chance. I ordered the mackerel fillet, but was told that they didn't have any so I changed my order to lamb chops. Another person in our group also ordered lamb chops. Two minutes later, the server came back and told us that not only were they out of mackerel, they only had one lamb chop left. As it was only 8pm

Two minutes later, the server came back and told us that not only were they out of mackerel, they only had one lamb chop left. As it was only 8pm and we were the first turn, I was surprised they had already run out of food. The server then admitted that they had the items, but were SAVING IT FOR THE REGULARS!!!

So unless you're already a regular patron, expect to be treated second class. At this rate, I hope they have enough regulars to sustain their business cuz they're not making any new friends.

As usual, the food was undercooked and half the table sent the food back to be re-cooked. Service was very slow, but given the full capacity, I can understand. Servers' attitudes were generally very good.
