My friend said her tagine was salty when he told the waiter but he did not reply at all regarding her comments.

We asked for bread and had to repeat this twice.

I asked for a coke twice and that never arrived.

So overall a somewhat bad service; won't be coming back again.

Le Souk is one of 3 family owned restaurants and specializes in Moroccan and a variety of Middle Eastern food. It is quite a unique restaurant, authentic in appearance, food and service. Having an acquired taste for Middle Eastern food, despite the shortage of this type of food in Hong Kong, I have had the opportunity to sample a few of the Moroccan and Tunisian restaurants in the Soho area. The subtle use of spices and herbs add a distinctive taste to the meal. Moroccan food comprises a heavenly balance between light and refreshing vegetables to the sizzling marinated meats. Desserts consist of natural sweet flavours infused with the earthy flavours of nuts and honey. The cuisine consists of a mixture of Berber and Arabic influences with suggestive flavours of preserved lemons, Ras el Hanout , Za’atar and Harissa.
As a starter we ordered the Mixed Mezze Platter to share. This involved a series of spiced dips and appetizers such as; falafel, hummus, lamb kofta, spiced goats cheese and olives, roast tomato dip and numerous quantities of Pita bread. The falafel was zesty and crunchy while the lamb kofta was infused with a mild taste of parsley, cumin and coriander. The creamy hummus, with a touch of paprika, was a perfect accompaniment. The olives and goat cheese were tempting and had a tang of spiciness whilst the roast tomato dip was quite luscious with a hint of mint. The warm pita bread accompanied all this perfectly.

For the main course I had ordered the house specialty of a Mixed Grill Platter which was simply divine. It involved a series of succulent, sizzling merghez sausages, marinated lamb chops, grilled vegetables and spiced couscous accompanied by a delicious vegetable tagine. This intense dish was perfect after the light starter and was very balanced and nutritional.
Although desserts were not the main highlight of this vibrant restaurant, they were filled with nutty, refreshing ingredients to finish off the indulgent experience. In line with most Middle Eastern desserts I tried the Baklava, which was crispy and sweet with a nutty twang. It came together with a complementary fruit punch, which included cherries, apricots and figs.

The inner décor was a reflection of Moroccan culture with the walls adorned with ancient Middle-eastern paintings. The Mosaic stained glass lanterns offering dim lighting created a cozy yet Moorish atmosphere. Despite being traditional, they had quite a modern bar at the back offering a variety of drinks whilst in the background soothing Moroccan music drifted throughout the young energetic crowd with the occasional loud clapping of the waiter. In conclusion, I found the place well decorated and designed for this sort of place - a funky but elegant family owned restaurant in the busy, energetic streets of SoHo.

The only flaw would be the size - very small and cozy but sometimes impossible to get a table without waiting hours. However, the excellent service definitely made up for this shortfall. The waiters were dressed in tunics and turbans and were very friendly. They were familiar with the menu and were very open to conversations and opinions. Not only were they welcoming but enthusiastic, which inspired a cheerful vibe throughout the diners.

In conclusion, I left this experience feeling inspired and fully satisfied. It was a true pleasure to have good food, in a nice environment with lovely people. I would most definitely return and try the splendid looking lamb Tagine. For anyone looking for a culinary adventure and insight on a culture not very commonly found in Hong Kong, visit Le Souk. Out of the few Middle Eastern restaurants I have been to, it is definitely one of the best and will dearly stay in my memory.

Seafood Tagine
it smelled unbelievably good, i couldnt help but eat it right away. Fish, clams, prawns, onions, tomatoes and roasted peppers were all layered in this classic tagine with tomato soup base. the flavours were stunning, the sweetness of seafoods combined with the soup base, it was good just to have the soup with bread. on top of that, seafoods were all very fresh, big portion too, very impressive.

this seafood rice, i forgot the name of it but it was just as amazing as the two above, seafoods were fresh and tasty, the sauce combined everything together. It was beautifully creamy but the tang of the tomato sauce complemented the seafood very nicely, heavenly tasty.

The prices for SOHO are very reasonable. This place is definately on our list of regular eateries.

Lebanese babaganoush(HK$60)

Moroccan mint tea(HK$40)

I actually enjoyed everything I ate. The owner is very good in making his guests feel welcome. I accidently ordered a hot dessert, which I hate and he quickly solved it with getting me some nice icecream on the house.

Only thing they need to fix is the staff that often enjoys cluttering together in front of the restaurant and not attending to the people inside. Once we sat at a table next to the entrance and the whole staff decided to stand there and talk. They were so close to us, I considered asking them if they wanted to sit down with us. No idea why they did not notice this. When the owner arrived, he shood them away. Let's hope that will improve, we will sure be back to check!

The atmosphere in the restaurant is good because it only few people in the restaurant.
And I Know soho district is a lot of people every day.(Perhaps it only 6:00p.m at night) . Also, it always play the middle eastern music, and it is soft. What's more, the gallery and charm are full of Moroccan Style.

Let me told about what the food taste. We had ordered

Kefta tagine(HK155)
It is make of lamb kefta(skewer lamb), green beans, potatoes, onions, red & green peppers simmered in charmoula sauce & topped with a slow cooked poached eggs. The sauce is little sour and spicy, as like as the tomato sauce with pork chop in my school lunch box that I sometime have. The lamb is the cutlet of the tenderloin, taste is strong, I like it!
But the egg I can't taste ! Although that, I think It is an excellent dishes.

My conclusion
The food in there are good. Unique Fly in the ointment is the poached egg in kefta tagine. The waiter in there are excellent. What's more, one of the waiter talked with us sometimes(but I think he is a boss because I had seen him in the newspaper of the web). I think we will come back again. I can't forgot this meal!
