I went with their set lunch and decided to pick this beef brisket and mashed potatoes ($108) over a number of other options that included my favorite kimchi rice but the results were slightly disappointing. While I was expecting some nicely braised beef brisket, the dish came in a pot with sliced beef brisket and a spicy broth (like a hot pot). Well, not exactly how I imagined it. Under the soup were the mashed potatoes they promised but this was just too weird.

近期最受歡迎的韓國小吃,怎可以沒有炸雞的份兒?不過 Momojein 賣的是連骨的「原隻韓式炸雞」($230),做法亦大有分別。雞肉先放入雞湯中浸泡六小時才油炸,所以雞肉炸過後亦不覺乾身。炸雞本身的味道是偏淡的,可按需要點淮鹽或酸瓜醬,個人覺得後者的化學作用較佳。伴碟的還有炸蓮藕片。

We began the meal with the savory Kalbi Hotteok, and ended with this sweet dainty Hotteok with ice cream. The savory one took a creative twist on stuffing Korean Kalbi into it, whereas the sweet one is more on the traditional side. Similar to the traditional Hotteok, the Korean pancake is filled with various grains and seeds, then fried to a slight crispy yet chewy texture. Pairing the warm Hotteok with vanilla ice cream created that hot-and-cold effect, as usual, it never fails. I'd say the bananas on the top didn't really make a large effect on the overall flavor but well since we love bananas a lot, so yea you know it!

Today I visited Momojein based on many positive feedbacks from my friends and neighbours.  But this dessert I had today at Momojein (HKD85)  was really a HUGE miss and not worth the money at all. It made me regret having come to the restaurant as a whole.

On the menu, it was described to come with "shaved ice sherbet".  So I somewhat expected plenty of shaved ice sherbet with small pieces of rice cake elegantly springkled all over the ice, taking into account its price of HKD 85.  However,  it was served in a deep rice bowl with a radius of about 5cm.  You can imagine how small the bowl is if you look at the above pictures closely- compare the size of it with the aqua panna water bottle and dessert plates next to it.  

The amount was not only tiny but the ice sherbet was "literally" a spoonful.  (beware my picture looks quite distorted- sherbet was really less than a mouthful, hence my hubby and I could not share it.)

What shocked me was not only the amount of ice sherbet but also the filling underneath.  It was small rice cakes deep fried in oil and covered with black sesame powder: nothing more than that. 

Having an ample experience of cooking Korean food as a housewife, I can assure you that this dish costs less than 5-10 HK dollars.  Let me imagine how they made it.  Just 4 pieces of rice cake cut into half making it 8 pieces in total.  Then briefly fried in oil.  Dipped in honey and rolled in the bed of black sesame powder.

In short, this dessert is something anyone can easily make; especially if you are Korean, you cannot help laughing at its size and level of taste.  From my perspective it takes 2 minutes to make and requires not much effort. 

Above all it does not deserve to be the most expensive dish (before tax HKD85, after tax HKD94) in the dessert menu. Other dessert menus priced at HKD 65 looked a lot fancier.   Do never ever order this dish.  You will be thankful to me for pretelling you this.

Even if you don't have sensitive taste buds, most Koreans living in Hong Kong would appreciate that this dessert is a rip off.  Moreover it was NOT delicious. I ate 1 piece of rice cake and put my fork down.  It was edible but there was nothing special about it.  The whole presentation, taste and amount plus price put me off.  My hubby tried one or maybe two pieces of rice cakes and we asked for the bill leavinge most of the dessert.  

FYI I regularly consume Joel Robuchon/ Mandarin Oriental cakes and this dessert was equivalent to two pieces of such marvellous cakes in terms of price.

At such thought, I was upset. So I complained to the manager about the dessert.  She shortly replied she would take my feedback into account but that was it.  Normally in a restaurant, they would feel regreful to see their food unconsumed and to hear such complaints.  It is quite natural they offer its cancellation or a substitute (another dessert they can confidently present?) or some sorts of good gesture to ameliorate the situation.

However her service was stiff and unkind.  We didn't want to be those who expect a free dessert, so paid the bill at the same time as complaining to the manager. 

But I cannot erase this lingering impression of the Korean manager in a black suit.  In fact, upon entering the restaurant, she showed us our table and I noticed that she was not a kind person, which gave me a bad impression about the restaurant from the beginning.  My perception was not wrong.  In Korea, we see people's impressions and prejudge them by the images they ooze.  The manager did not have a sense of ownership, and she was unkind.  

To sum it up, I strongly advise you not to order this specific dessert.  Other savoury dishes we had were pretty fine.  We had 4 dishes plus steamed rice.  The bill came up to 545HKD.  Without the horrible dessert, it would have been only 450HKD for two persons.  I would give 7.5 out of 10 on average for Momojein's interior, atmosphere ans food.  Service was not terrible but I have been so many other restaurants with better service.  Last but not least, Tofu balls with kimchee was my only favourite.

Bulgogi即係燒牛肉
黎到既時候幾Surprise,因為冇expect過係咁嘅賣相
傳統既Bulgogi都係一塊塊既牛肉片,呢到竟然成碟網燒牛扒咁
個牛其實係好多牛肉bulgogi堆成一大塊黎,加物好多蒜片咁樣燒
燒網下面仲有d熱嘅石春喺到heat住個牛,唔怕食食下好塊牛凍哂
食果陣只需要稍微用筷子叉開就食到,一d都唔un
加上燒過既蒜片,牛肉吸哂蒜片既香味,簡直係一個享受

不過食呢個bulgogi既時候發生左一件小插曲
都有小小唔開心,諗住同餐廳講下反映下
經理知道後都即刻有回應,而且仲送左個小食比我地試

底下係一個似辣味噌既肉醬
茄子同年糕都好似天婦羅咁,個炸粉勁薄勁Light

最後食埋個dessert: Sugar Glazed Sweet Potato ($65)
一開頭男朋友話叫呢個既時候我有D抗拒
因為感覺呢D糖炒既甜品都會好膩
而當時我地其實真係食得好飽下,所以想食D Light d既甜品
但好彩最後都聽左佢講
因為呢個dessert我可以講話係小公主gei 2015最好食甜品(沒有之一)
賣相精緻唔再講
入面除左Sugar Glazed既蕃薯,仲有蕃薯Mousse同蕃薯片
而呢3樣野不論獨立食,定夾埋食,都好好食
個Sugar Glazed蕃薯,個糖係薄薄一層岩岩wrap住件蕃薯
層糖食落去係脆,而因為好薄身既關係一d都唔膩
個mousse就好似食緊個超甜既紫蕃薯一樣,好滑仲有d似mochi
蕃薯片上面灑滿芝麻一齊焗,脆、甜、香
極力推介大家一定要去食呢個甜品
