OK - I have read a lot of bad reviews of Ya Kun, but I went anyway. I have been to lots of Ya Kun shops in Singapore and I only get one thing. The ONLY thing that people eat at Ya Kun in Singapore, is kaya toast with soft boiled eggs and coffee. It is amazing and no different here than in Singapore. DON'T order anything else - the Singaporeans don't.
OK, so we ordered two set As. This is kaya toast, soft boiled eggs and coffee.
The toast is lovely. It is, as in Singapore, very toasted, thin and brown, served slathered in kaya with a pat of cold, unspread butter sandwiched between the slices. This is the vehicle for the eggs. It is sweet and eggy and delicious.
The eggs are what would be called half boiled in England. Perhaps they are not to everyone's taste, but if you enjoy Japanese onsen eggs, then you will like these. Served in their own little bowl, the two eggs should be dowsed in soy sauce and white pepper. You then use the toast as a way of conveying those eggs to your mouth. This has the magic effect of mixing crunchy, sticky and soft as well as sweet, eggy and salty.
AMAZING in Singapore, AMAZING here. If you don't like it, that is your taste, not a restaurant fail, as it is identical to the one in Singapore.
If I have any gripe, it is that the coffee was not quite right. It should be shorter and stronger, so that the condensed milk makes a dark creamy coffee. Here it is more like filter coffee strength, so they need to adjust it. However, I will forgive them for this, as the kaya toast and eggs are great.
Try this dish. Don't order laksa and nasi lemak and the stuff that they don't specialize in. Would you go to McDonald's for a salad? Not really.
The service was fine, but it was not busy. The price was great - $39 for the set.
