Back from a long vacation in Canada and  I wanted something Asian. So, I met boyfriend here for lunch as I wanted to try it.

PappaRich Malaysian Delights is a popular chain in throughout Malaysia with international branches from Australia to yes .. now Hong Kong.

Located in Causeway Bay, in the L Square (a building with a number of othe restaurants that I've tried the majority of and will go through them all shortly). The layout is actually quite small but that is the way the building is set up. Decoration is quite nice, though. It oddly looked more like a Western restaurant than Malaysian.

As we were here for lunch, only the lunch menu was available. Menu in English and Chinese. Oddly, there is no lunch sets. Only the same items from their regular menu with no discount in price but only the offering of a drink at 50% off. Not very competitive in an area of the city with a competitive lunch market. No wonder, it wasn't even full during lunch hour.

However, boyfriend had grabbed a flyer from one of the women passing out flyers outside the MTR station. With the flyer, you get a free coffee or tea during lunch and afternoon tea session. So, we used that to get a drink.

I ordered the Papprich Chicken Rice ($88). It was fairly sad to look at. Meat was tender enough though the amount of skin was actually more than the amount of chicken meat. Beansprouts were served and were a bit bland even though there was a layer of sauce on top. It came with a bowl of chicken soup that was actually not too bad but I think for $88, they could have skimmed the fat off.

The coffee was  bit weak and far too bitter, verging on a burnt taste. Remember to mix it up as the condensed milk found at the bottom of the cup.  I have no idea why it was served to me in this spilt state. For this price, I expected a bit more tidiness. Boyfriend had the tea. I forgot to take a photo but it was filled with bubbles on top. This was confusing to us. It also tasted weak.

Food was comparable to what I'd find at a cha chan teng for half the price, give your a free drink and there is no 10%. No wonder it was so quiet. Will not return.

I got to the restaurant a little after 7:30, and it was packed.  There were 3 servers working, and one of them looked like the manager.  Another couple arrived at the restaurant at the same time I did, and the manager seated them first.  Then, he took care of a few other tables and came back to the front, and I told him I wanted to order take-outs.  He pointed me to the menus on the front desk and said he will be back to take my order.  I looked at the menu and decided on what to order.  The manager came back, and I started to tell him what I wanted, and he told me to mark the take-out menu with my order.  So, I used the pencil on the front desk and marked my order.  While I was waiting for him to come back, I saw that he was making everyone mark the menus for their orders even though he had a handheld device for taking orders.  He would take the filled-in menus and proceed to put the order in through the handheld device.  That's such a waste of paper when he could have just put in the order through the handheld device!

The manager finally came back to take my order, and he came back with my check 5 minutes later.

Barley Water:  This was lightly-sweetened and very refreshing on a hot day!  I wish they gave me a thicker straw because I couldn't suck up all the barley from the bottom of the cup.

While I was waiting for my order, clouds of steam were billowing out from the semi-open kitchen into the dining area.  From where I was standing, I couldn't see exactly where the steam came from, it was just a bit frightening to see that!

I was waiting for my order for a long time, so I was watching how the staff was working.  It looked like the manager was the only one taking orders and handling the checks.  The two other servers were only delivering the food and bussing the tables.  In that sense, the restaurant seemed quite understaffed since patrons had to wait for a while to have their orders taken and pay for their checks.

The manager could see that I was growing increasingly impatient after waiting for more than 20 minutes for my order.  (I thought I would have been out of there in about 10 minutes since Malaysian food usually doesn't take this long!)  A couple of minutes later, he told me that they were waiting on my naan bread order.  Then, another 5 minutes later, my order was finally ready, and I left the restaurant 40 minutes after I arrived!

Good thing  I was able to catch a minibus right away and got home about 10 minutes later.  Nothing leaked in the bag, so that's good.

Satay Beef:  The beef was pretty tender and seasoned nicely.  I wish there was more satay sauce, and the cucumber was cut into really small cubes that it was really hard to eat, and at that size, the cucumber's crunchy texture was lost.

Naan with Curry Sauce: As soon as I opened the box, I was surprised to see the naan is garlic naan.  The curry sauce was pretty good, but the garlic naan tasted very strange with the curry sauce!  The curry sauce tasted much better with the plain naan that came with the satay.  Rather than having a naan with curry sauce, I wish they had the option of having the roti canai with just a curry sauce rather than curry sauce with chicken drumstick.

Pappa Chicken Rice: The chicken rice was the most disappointing dish of the night!  First of all, our order didn't come with any soup, but that's not a huge issue.  As soon as I looked at the take-out container, I was surprised by how small the portion was!  They charge $88 for this chicken rice, but the portions for the chicken and the rice were both very small!  I had a piece of chicken, and it was pretty tender.  Then, I looked at the rice, it looks really white!  I had a scoop of the rice, and it was PLAIN WHITE RICE!  Chicken rice is not complete without the oily rice!  Then, I remembered when I was waiting for my order, another family came in, and the manager told them they ran out of chicken rice, and I thought I must be the lucky one to grab the last order.  If they ran out of oily rice, they should have told me, and I would have just returned another day!

I won't be returning to Papparich anytime soon! They took forever to prepare my order, which consisted of basic Malaysian street food!  The restaurant is under-staffed, and the staff is poorly-trained.  The food is not good and not very authentic!  I can find much better quality Malaysian food in HK for the same or even cheaper price!
Other Info. : I saw a father bring his two sons to use the bathroom, and both of his sons were walking around barefoot! The two boys looked like primary schoolers, so they were not young toddlers. I was surprised that the restaurant didn't say anything.

2nd time, ordered the curry laksa. Another disappointment. And for drink, I ordered 'Cham'. I have no idea what their version of 'Cham' was, cause it was definitely what I was used to back in Malaysia.
As a standalone, the food is not too bad, AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT CLAIM TO BE SERVING MALAYSIAN DELIGHTS. Btut since they claimed to be serving Malaysian food, and if we were to evaluate based on their claim, then the food is awful.

The menu is very eye catching and provides pictures of most of the famous Malaysian dishes offered in this restaurant. The restaurant has opened for 3 months (since January 2016).

The price of the dishes are printed on a separate sheet and diners have to order food by marking on the separate sheet. From appetizer, toasts, drinks, main dishes to desserts, all of the dishes presented are in authentic Malaysian style. Unlike fusion food restaurants, the selling point of this shop is the originality of the Malaysian cuisine it offers.
We have ordered a “Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken + Sambal Prawns” (HK$78). The rice is coconut oil rice with very pleasant smell. The curry is presented with a chicken drumstick and sided with prawns.

Although the size looks very small compared to other Malaysian restaurants in town, the presentation of this dish is very favourable. The taste of the curry is very heavy and a bit oily. It resembles authentic Malaysian food like I had in Kuala Lumpur.

Apart from rice, “Seafood Char Kway Teow” has been ordered (HK98). This is one of my favourite Malaysian dish and there are 2 big prawns on top of the rice noodles in this dish. The taste is very heavy with a lot of spices in it.

For vegetables, this dish is “Four Heavenly King with Sambal Belacan”(HK$78) is ordered. The mix of vegetables is very special, the taste is mixed with heavy Malaysian spices and is a bit oily. But we love this dish as you sense it is freshly cooked from the wok.

The location and environment of this restaurant is very good, as we sit at window side, we could overlook Lockhart Road on a pleasant evening. The decoration of this shop is simple and comfortable with no bad smell. This restaurant is recommended for diners who would love to have an asian twist for meals.

We were very full and therefore we did not try the desserts nor the toast here.  But if you love Malaysian toasts, you may wish to give  it a try in this shop.

Today, I came back with a group of 7 people. May I add that I AM MALAYSIAN and I also brought ANOTHER MALAYSIAN friend along.

We ordered:
1) Char Kway Teow
2) Nasi Lemak
3) Nasi Rich with Rendang
4) Laksa.
5) Fried Eggplant, Petai and Long Beans
Allow me to comment on these dishes
1) The Char Kway Teow is the STAR of all the dishes. Even my Malaysian friends who had been there (recommended by me) were full of praises.
2) the NASI LEMAK was disappointing. The rice was not "lemak" or fragrant enough. There was not enough coconut content in it. The Sambal prawns and sauce were mediocre. The small friend anchovies and peanutes (ikan bilis) was not very crispy.
3) The NASI RICH was even worse. The rendang was too stringy and did not taste like anything I have had at other Malaysian places (e.g. Sabah or Cafe Malacca). The yellow rice with diced veggies was mediocre. The star loser was the rendang-it was not the taste we were accustomed to , and the texture was hard.
4) The laksa was passable--but the soup based wasn't terribly tasty
5) The FRIED EGGPLANT, PETAI (or bitter beans) and LONG BEANS was not too bad. I suppose stir frying this with the right condiments was not to difficult to do, as the stir fry technique is something familiar to local chefs.

I WOULD consider coming back----had it not been for the rather POOR SERVICE that not just I --but our friends observed. One of my friends asked the waiter to adjust the a/c so that it was less cold--he didn't even acknowledge him. The waiter came back and looked at me and said "But if we do that, it will be too humid". On top of this, we had a big group of 7-8 people. We asked that the a couple from our group be given a separate bill-however it didn't happen and when we asked for the bill, everything was dumped together. Thirdly, it was rather obvious to the lot of us, that whenever we asked for help (e.g. an extra spoon, a chopstick), help was not forthcoming---people were "too busy" doing their own thing.
And the worst of it all was the waiter who refused to help us take a group picture on one of our smartphones. He said  he "was busy--and would do it later". He never did.

Papparich is a franchise in Malaysia with branches in Australia and Singapore too. The service personnel are supposed to be trained well--but this wasn't the case at this HK branch.
And therefore, I would have to think carefully about coming back-unless I have a serious craving for Char Kway Teow. There are other places in town which also do it quite well, though.

Lasi Lamak with beef panang ($72)

When I was working in Singapore, I probably eat nasi lemak every other day since I have a lot of Philippines colleagues. I remember it was spicy, savory, and flavourful from all different pungent ingredients and spicies. The pyramid shape of rice is almost necessary for nasi lemak.

At PappaRich, you may even order a main dish for your nasi lemak and we have picked curry beef brisket. The beef brisket was semi-hardened in texture. I do prefer softer and more tender beef brisket but they only offer harder meats. Seafood Curry Laksa ($96)

The almost a hundred dollar laksa was just average in size. Filled with a mixed of seafood, the laksa soup was not as aromatic as I was expecting. The creaminess from the coconut milk was a bit too thin for me. Meanwhile, I still think the size could be a bit bigger. Hainan toasted bread with butter and kaya ($18)

The kaya and butter almost bursted out from the toasts. The sweetness was over the head but still pretty delicious.

I am actually still missing the very authentic kaya toast from Ar Kwun, I meant the real Ar Kwun branches in Malaysia.
